  5. 2½ Years • September classes start • First Placement January – April 2005 • Classes again in May June • September classes – Year 2 – 2005 • Second Placement January – April - 2006 • Classes again in May June • Third Placement September 2006 • Program completion December 2006

  6. Intensive and Fast-Paced

  7. Field Placement • Occurs only in: • Hamilton, Toronto, Burlington, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge, Simcoe and Brantford • At least one, possibly two out of town placements • Year one – School based placement, 3 days per week and 2 days of classes • Year two & three – shift work, weekends, 4 & 4.5 days per week with Monday classes

  8. Field Placement • Agencies: • Boards of Education • CAS • Residential Treatment – Lynnwood, Lutherwood, Kids Link • Young Offender Facilities – Dawn Patrol, Banyan Community Services

  10. All CYW Courses must be completed prior to entering a field placement.

  11. Drivers License • Frequently students travel to field placement agencies not on a bus route. It is advisable that you obtain your drivers licence prior to entering the CYW Program. • The college provides a shuttle service to Brantford.

  12. Maturity The development of self-awareness and emotional maturity along with the ability to understand the degree of one's own involvement with people are of prime importance in the practice of Child and Youth Work.

  13. Academics In order to proceed into a Field Placement Semester all previous Child and Youth Worker courses must be successfully completed.

  14. CYW Role • Emotionally troubled children and youth • Experiencing a range of social, emotional, or behavioural challenges in their lives. • Residential and day treatment, custody, schools, community agencies and family homes • Direct care, advocacy, treatment, teach social and life skills, manage behaviour and provide counselling.

  15. If you have been convicted of an offence you may be denied the opportunity to enter field placement. A certificate of "Police Clearance" and/or "Consent to Disclosure" may be requested by the field placement agency at a cost to you the student.

  16. First Aid & CPR • Proof of completion of a Standard First Aid Course, and CPR is required prior to entering Field Placement. • A medical clearance is also required prior to placement and this medical clearance is managed through our Mohawk College Medical Services Department.

  19. General Education Within The Child and Youth Worker Program, a General Education Course is required and you are encouraged to take this course either as scheduled, or at other times which do not conflict with your timetable.

  20. PLAR • Prior Learning, Assessment and Recognition • Official recognition of skills and knowledge which match individual course outcomes. • Acquired during on-the-job experience, formal education and training programs
