  14. What you need to provide • Nominations should comprise the following, each as a separate word document submitted electronically and in hard copy (note maximum word/page lengths): • a) Signed statement of support from the institution’s senior manager (maximum two A4 sides) • b) Claim for NT fellowship: a statement of how the individual demonstrates excellence relevant to each of the three headline individual award criteria (maximum 5000 words) • c) Brief curriculum vitae (maximum three A4 sides) • d) Application form (for internal administration) • e) Personal profiles and photographs • f) Equal opportunity form • Recommend: Draft the CV first, the claim criterion 3 second, then criteria 1&2, finally the statement of support and other docs www.medev.ac.uk

  15. Institutional statement of support • The supporting statement from the institution’s senior manager is an essential aspect of the nomination. Although there is no standard form or structure to the statement, it may be helpful to provide evaluative comments under the three headline criteria with plausible evidence to support the achievements stated in the nominee’s claim. In particular, the statement should: • Endorse the validity of the nominee’s claim for excellence • Provide an institutional context within which the nominee has been identified as excellent • Provide any additional supporting information which might be most appropriately expressed by an institutional representative rather than the nominee her/himself www.medev.ac.uk

  16. Claim for NT fellowship • A statement of how the individual demonstrates excellence relevant to each of the three headline individual award criteria • 5000 words • Each criterion is ‘given equal consideration’ • Must be reflective in style and include how the candidate uses pedagogic research outcomes to help them teach • The examples given are not meant to be limiting • Recommend choosing some specific experiences and reflecting on how they changed your professional/educational practice • The formatting requirements apply to all submissions www.medev.ac.uk

  17. Curriculum vitae • Nominees are advised to focus on their experience and outputs with a view to demonstrating a robust commitment to enhancing and supporting student learning and delivering or facilitating teaching excellence. • Have to be selective • Qualifications • Career history • Selected publications • Try NOT to repeat from the personal statement/claim • The formatting requirements apply to all submissions including the CV www.medev.ac.uk

  18. Formatting requirements • The three nomination documents (statement of support, claim for NT fellowship, and CV) must adhere to all the following formatting requirements: • Font: Arial 11 point; A4 portrait only; 2cm minimum • Line spacing: 1.5 lines • Headers: should contain the nominee’s full name and nominating institution and footer: should indicate “page x of y” • All section headings, text within tables or diagrams, numbers and any references will count towards the word limit • Footnotes should not be used but endnotes may be • Diagrams (not pictures) are permitted. Words must be counted • Web links should only be used for reference • Layout – use styles please!!! Reviewers are going to be sent these electronically, not all work off printouts www.medev.ac.uk

  19. Quotes from past winners • Guillaume Alinier, University of Hertfordshire • As a young academic, being awarded the National Teaching Fellowship helped me to boost my confidence. To that effect, I took on the challenge of hosting and organising two conferences, one of which was international, namely the 2007 conference of the National Association for Medical Simulators (now known as the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare – ASPiH) and the 2008 conference of the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine (SESAM). 20. Thinking of applying to the NTFS? • 10:15 Arrival and coffee • 10:30 Welcome, introductions and outline of the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme • 11:00 Activity - constructing an application and examples of evidence • 12:00 Activity - review of sample materials • 13:00 Lunch • 13:45 Activity - signposting a scholarly/pedagogic approach and reflective writing • 15:00 Wrap up and conclusions • 15:30 Close www.medev.ac.uk

  21. Activity: constructing an application and examples of evidence • Identify possible sources of evidence • Personal • Institutional • National • International • For each of the three criterion • Individual excellence • Raising the profile of excellence • Developing excellence • Preferably use triangulated/verified evidence (or back up in statement of support) www.medev.ac.uk

  22. National Teaching Fellowship Scheme – Individual Awards 2011 • Selection Criteria All nominees will be assessed on evidence provided in the core nomination documents: • a) Nominees should address and make a claim for each criterion fully and in turn. • b) Each of the three criteria below will be given equal consideration in the assessment process. • c) Nominees should not feel limited by the illustrative examples below. The examples are intended to provide indicative areas of evidence for each criterion. • d) It is the intention of the Scheme to recognise impact and engagement beyond a nominee’s immediate academic or professional role. • e) Opportunity to contribute will be taken into account and therefore should be made explicit. For example a nominee may have made a significant contribution to learning and teaching in an area that falls outside their substantive institutional role. www.medev.ac.uk

  23. Constructing an application and examples of evidence • Criterion 1 Individual excellence: evidence of promoting and transforming the student learning experience. • For example by: arousing curiosity to stimulate and inspire learning, organising and presenting resources cogently and imaginatively, recognising and supporting diversity of student learning needs, drawing upon the results of relevant research, scholarship and professional practice, engaging with and contributing to the established literature or the nominee’s own evidence base. www.medev.ac.uk

  32. National Teaching Fellowship Scheme – Individual Awards 2011 • Alpha One The application meets the criterion in full, in explicit and relevant ways and in a wide range of contexts, commensurate with the applicant’s role/opportunity to contribute to learning and teaching and/or pedagogic practice or policy. • The application demonstrates an outstanding contribution which has transformed student learning. The work of this individual, as presented in the application, has significantly raised the profile and/or standard of learning and teaching and demonstrates the potential to do so in the future. The evidence provided toward this criterion is commensurate with that expected of a National Teaching Fellow. www.medev.ac.uk

  33. National Teaching Fellowship Scheme – Individual Awards 2011 • Alpha Two The application meets the criterion in full, in explicit and relevant ways and in a reasonable range of contexts in light of their role/opportunity to contribute to learning and teaching and/or pedagogic practice or policy. • The application demonstrates an outstanding contribution to student learning. The work of this individual, as presented in the application, has raised the profile and/or standard of learning and teaching and demonstrates the potential to do so in the future. The evidence provided toward this criterion is commensurate with that expected of a National Teaching Fellow. www.medev.ac.uk

  34. National Teaching Fellowship Scheme – Individual Awards 2011 • Alpha Three The application meets the criterion in full, in explicit and relevant ways but in a limited range of contexts in light of their role/opportunity to contribute to learning and teaching and/or pedagogic practice or policy. • The application demonstrates an outstanding contribution to student learning. The work of this individual, as presented in the application, has to some extent raised the profile and/or standard of learning and teaching and also demonstrates the potential to do so in the future. The evidence provided toward this criterion is commensurate with that expected of a National Teaching Fellow. www.medev.ac.uk

  35. National Teaching Fellowship Scheme – Individual Awards 2011 • Beta One The application demonstrates substantial but not complete fulfillment of the criterion. • Some explicit and relevant examples are provided. In light of the applicant’s role/opportunity to contribute to learning and teaching and/or pedagogic practice or policy, there is insufficient evidence provided to fulfill the criterion and the examples provided could be more wide-ranging. The application demonstrates that the individual’s work has raised the profile and/or standard of learning and teaching to some extent and clearly shows the potential to do so in the future. www.medev.ac.uk

  36. Quotes from past winners • Kirsten Hardie, The Arts University College at Bournemouth • The National Teaching Fellowship enables me to work internationally with colleagues across the HE sector and beyond: to explore learning and teaching issues within my discipline and, excitingly, trans-discipline. It enhances my skills, knowledge and experience and opens many doors. The invitation to Her Majesty the Queen’s Reception at Buckingham Palace in ‘Celebration of the British Design Industry and Excellence in Teaching’ has been one of the most surprising outcomes. The most rewarding, are those that enhance learning – working with students. Higher Education Academy (2010). Recognising success: voices from 10 years of the NTFS. Higher Education Academy, 50p. Accessed from http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/assets/York/documents/ourwork/ntfs/NTFS10.pdf www.medev.ac.uk

  40. Signposting a scholarly/pedagogic approach and reflective writing • Embedding scholarship/pedagogic research – please include references, noting that • Reflecting on learning – those insights in your life when you permanently changed your practice • These can fall in any section but may be best in criterion 3 Developing Excellence – how have your experiences shaped your life/approach/teaching/mentoring etc.? www.medev.ac.uk

  41. Example of reflection A severely dyslexic ‘Computing and Business’ one-year placement student profoundly influenced me and my approach to teaching in 1995. After months of struggling with her academic reports we invented a system (informed by Becker, HS. Writing for social scientists. Chicago Guides, 1986, and my experience with speed reading (staff development)) to ensure that her sentences started with a What; included at least one from How/Who/Where or When; and usually ended with a Why, did her written communication achieve (what I felt to be) an acceptable standard. Following these principles she could communicate What she had done, How she did it, and Why she chose that method. It highlighted for me how novices systematise processes by wrote-learning the steps, in contrast to experts who internalise information by efficiently cutting to the most important aspects of any problem (Benner, P. From novice to expert. AJN, 1982:82(3);402-407). I have since used these ‘sentence building’ techniques to help writers prioritise their core messages for everything from internal communications to publishing in refereed journals. www.medev.ac.uk
