Clinical research fellowships • To encourage clinicians into an academic research career. • Open to medical graduates, usually during specialty training. • Provides an opportunity for training in clinical and/or laboratory research techniques. • Successful candidates expected to register for a higher degree (usually a PhD). • 3 years funding - includes salary and running costs.

  15. Clinician scientist fellowships • Awarded to medical graduates who have completed their first period of research training (in most cases a PhD). • Provide a combination of clinical training with a period of postdoctoral research. • 3-5 years funding depending on the number of years of specialist training still required. • Funding covers salary, technical support, running expenses and equipment.

  16. Foundation fellowships • Open to basic science PhD students in final year, or within 1 year of completion. • Opportunity to develop independent research ideas at an early stage in career. • 3 years funding - salary and running costs. • Sponsor(s) should not be previous PhD supervisor. • Preference given to applicants moving to another lab in the UK or, if remaining in the same institution, spend a period of time in another lab, preferably abroad.

  17. Career development fellowships • To attract and retain talented postdoctoral scientists in research. • Provides the opportunity to develop an independent research career and progress towards higher-level appointments. • At least 3 years postdoctoral research experience required. • 5 years funding - includes salary and running costs.

  18. Clinical research training fellowship • Medical and dental graduate applicants at specialty registrar grade or below. Completed MRCP. • Up to 3 years funding - salary and a research training support grant of up to £15,000 per year. (Consumables, PhD fees, equipment, travel).

  19. Clinician scientist fellowship • Post-doctoral clinical fellowship to establish clinicians as independent researchers. • Four years funding - salary, research support staff, research consumables, travel and equipment under full economic costs (FEC). • Provides the opportunity to spend up to one year in an overseas research centre, a second UK research centre or UK industrial centre.

  20. Career development award • For post-doctoral researchers to make the transition from post-doctoral research to independent investigator. • 3-6 years post-doc experience. • Five years funding - salary, research support staff, research consumables expenses, travel costs and equipment under FEC. • Provides the opportunity to spend up to two years in an overseas research centre, a second UK research centre or UK industrial centre.

  21. BBSRC fellowships • For basic scientists to establish themselves as independent researchers. • Institute Career Path / David Phillips. • 3-10 years postdoctoral experience. • Five years funding - salary, research support staff, research consumables, travel and equipment under FEC.

  22. University research fellowships • For basic scientists to establish themselves as independent researchers. • Early-mid stage of career (1-3 post docs). • Initially five years funding, followed by three year extension. • Includes salary under FEC and research expenses (13k in year 1, 11k thereafter).
