  2. Valley of the Dolls • Valley of the Dolls is a book that is given to Billy from the Tralfamadorians. The book begins immediately after WWII and involves three women who embark on careers that bring them to dizzying heights of fame and self-destruction.

  3. Summary • The Valley of the Dolls is a novel about the friendship between three women. The story spans twenty years, from 1945 to 1965, and is set primarily in New York City. Anne Welles, Neely O’hara and Jennifer North become friends and roommates. During there friendship they find fame, get married, and turn to drugs to cope with problems.

  4. Summary (continued) • The novel begins with a poem about how the road to “success” often leaves you too tired and sore to appreciate the goals you achieve, and that achievement is sometimes less rewarding than a struggle.

  5. Jacqueline Susann • The author of the book, Jacqueline Susann, wrote the book based on her own experiences with an acting career and being in a marriage.

  6. Sexuality • Many rumors have persisted that Susann was bisexual. People believe that her sexuality was part of the reason why the book was somewhat bizarre.
