  1. Biblical Anointing

  2. Asonzeh Franklin-Kennedy Ukah, “The Redeemed Christian Church of Church of God (RCCG), Nigeria. Local Identities And Global Processes In Arfican Pentecostalism.” 2003, p. 213.In a dramatic demonstration of the nature and uses of anointing, Adeboye recently declared hat God instructed him to wear three shirts at the same time for an undisclosed number of days and nights so that some of his own anointing would be transferred onto the shirts.

  3. God further directed him that on the first night of wearing these shirts, he should remove one of them, fold it in a particular way, place it in a basin, and fill the basin with oil. The oil will be the transmitting medium of the anointing in the shirt to everyone in the congregation who comes in contact with it.

  4. Upon completing this ritual, Adeboye admonished his congregation: When you touch the oil, you will touch your head, you will touch your mouth and then you will rub the remainder on the palm of your hand. The one on your head is going to take care of every yoke in your body. The one in your mouth is going to ensue that the prayers tonight will all be answered. And the one on your hand is going to ensure the beginning of your prosperity.

  5. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him.[Act.10:38]

  6. We will discover that anointing means to set someone / something aside for a holy use or to install somebody officially or ceremonially in a position or office by pouring anointing oil on the person’s head or forehead. • Anointing means empowerment, it means a person or thing has been set aside for a holy use. For example the anointing of physical objects, priests, prophets and kings. Sometimes the Holy Spirit comes into the persons to reside.

  7. Quick Overview of Anointing in the Bible • Anointing as Cosmetics Ruth3:3, Dan 10:3, 2 Sam.14:2 • Anointing as Hospitality Psalm 23:5 • Anointing of Physical objects Gen.31:13, Ex.29:26, 40:9, Lev.8:10, Num.7:1

  8. Anointing of Priests Ex.29:1-7, Ex.40:15, Ex.28:41, 29:29, Lev. 4:3 Num.3:3, Heb.5:5. • Anointing of kings Jdg.9:7-15, 1Sam.9:16,10:1,15:1, 1king 1:34-45, Ps.20:6, 2King 11:11-12, Ps.45:7, 1Sam.16:13, Isa.11:2 • Anointing of Prophets 1 Kings 19:16, 1Chron 16:22, Psa 105:15, Isa61:1, 21:5

  9. Tonight • We will take a look on the King Saul and David, their anointing into office, what God used them to accomplish after the empowerment, how they lost the anointing, how David regained it after repentance and anointing for healing as recorded in James 5:13-18.

  10. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him. Act.10:38

  11. 1 Samuel 10:1-2 • 1Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not that Jehovah hath anointed thee to be prince over his inheritance? 2When thou art departed from me to-day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found; and, lo, thy father hath left off caring for the asses, and is anxious for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

  12. 1 Samuel 10:3-5 • 3Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the oak of Tabor; and there shall meet thee there three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine: 4and they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread, which thou shalt receive of their hand. 5After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a timbrel, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they will be prophesying:

  13. 1 Sam 10:6 • And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

  14. 1 Sam 10:10-11 • And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

  15. 1 Sam 10:11 • 11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

  16. When the Anointing of God falls on you, you will begin to exceed expectations. • God himself will do it. And it will show that God is with you.

  17. 1 Samuel 15:1-3 1And Samuel said unto Saul, Jehovah sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of Jehovah. 2Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt. 3Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

  18. King Saul Lost His Anointing 1 Samuel 15:9 • 9But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

  19. 1 Sam 15:24-27 • And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.

  20. 1 Samuel 15:26-27 • 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

  21. Note • These things will make you loose your anointing that brings you abundant joy— fear of people and listening to their voices. • When you fear people and what they will do. You are bound to loose your anointing. • Trust and Obey God. For this is the only way that we can retain our anointing and enjoy life.

  22. You will become more miserable when you are fighting to maintain your reputation before men when you have not cleared your account with God. • 1John 1:9 Only God can forgive sin. • Humans cannot forgive sin. Saul missed the mark.

  23. How did Saul end his life? • Visit to Witch of Endor • 1Sam 28:7-21 • He committed Suicide 1 Sam 31:4-6 • When we depart from the way of God, friends, we are headed for sudden destruction. • To be joyful is to remain committed to God and His Church. Stop going to seek help where there is no help.

  24. Let your joy not end half way. • Trust God and Obey Him • Listen to the Voice of God alone. • Compare what people say to you and God’s instruction you. • Don’t seek help where the Spirit of God will not follow you to. • Psalm 50:15 God says Call upon • Jeremiah 29:13. “And you’ll seek me and find me if seek me with your heart”

  25. David received his Anointing (Holy Spirit) • 1 Sam 16:13 • Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

  26. David received his Anointing (Holy Spirit) • 1 Sam 16:14-15 • 14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit…troubled him. 15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

  27. David did the extra-ordinary when he received the Holy Spirit. For he conquered Goliath under the influence of the Anointing. 1 Sam 17

  28. Friends, there heights of joy that you can never reach without the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life. • There are embarrassments from the enemy that you cannot overcome without the Holy Spirit in you life. There are many things in this life that you cannot do without the Holy Spirit in your Life. Consider Acts 19:11-18

  29. Acts 19:11-16 • 11And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out. 13But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this. 15And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye? 16And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

  30. Rise my people, get into a deeper relationship with God and do exploits for Him. • There are so many un-reached to be reached. • There are many battles to be conquered in your life and you can be joyful when these battle are over.

  31. We must help those who once enjoyed the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives but some how trials of life threw them off balance. • And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

  32. Members under discipline. • Members who have lost their moral compass. • Members who have fallen into sin • Don’t condemn them, instead love them. For it could be you. They need those of us whose anointing is still fresh to encourage them.

  33. David lost his Anointing • 2 Sam 11:1- ff • And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

  34. 2 Sam 11:2 • 2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

  35. 2 Sam 11:3-5 • 3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

  36. Sexual immorality made David to loose his anointing. • Don’t get involved in immoral life. • Don’t have anything to do with prostitutes. • Be pure in your thought. • Be at the right place at the right time not at the wrong time.

  37. David was meant to be in battle but he did not go to the battle. As a result he saw what he was not meant to see. • Do not spend money to buy airtime just to see nude men and women in the internet: cyber-sex and pornography today is a booming but deadly business. Why should you sell your body for money?

  38. It is human to fall into sin. • It is devilish to glory in sin. • It is a saint that weeps over his/her sin.

  39. Nathan’s Rebuke • 2 Sam 12:1-8 ff • And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds: 3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

  40. David’s Reply 2Sam12:13 • 13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said unto David, Jehovah also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

  41. David’s Repentance PrayerPsalm 51:10-11 • Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

  42. Saul never valued his anointing just like many Christians today who do not value the Holy Spirit’s presence in their lives. And as a result, they end so sadly. • Please, whatever you do be sure you value the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life because without Him an evil spirit will possess you. No wonder many Christians are the way they are today. God have mercy.

  43. Even today God is willing to help you exceed the expectation of your enemies but are you willing to drop the worldliness and receive the Holy Spirit? Are you willing to obey the voice of God instead of the voice of the people? Are willing to fear God of the people? • In your business, career, family, child rearing, etc. Areas of your life that the enemy has said that you won’t succeed God is willing to help you to exceed expectations by the power of Holy Spirit. Amen

  44. Then, it was God, Samuel and King Saul. God, Nathan, and David. Today it is God, Pastor Uzoma, and You. Are you going to humble yourself life David or you choose to be like King Saul who ended in a terrible way. If you want to be like David then invite the Holy Spirit into your life. He’ll give you the joy that you need without any sorrows.

  45. 1Thessalonia 5:22 • Abstain from all appearances of evil

  46. Anointing for Healing • James 5:13-16 • 13Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15and the prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, it shall be forgiven him. 16Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working.

  47. First the ill person is to take the initiative to call on the elders of the church.[2] In some cases the elder(s) may suggest to the ill person to consider the option of anointing, but then leave it up to the sick member actually to call on the elders of the church.

  48. The directions given the elders are very specific. They are to do two things for the sick person: (1) to pray over him and (2) to anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

  49. The instruction to call upon the elders includes two implicit demands on the ill person. First, for the prayer of the elders to be effective the ill person needs to examine his own life for any known sin and then confess it to the Lord. As a matter of fact, the forgiveness of sins referred to in verse 15b seems to presuppose repentance and forgiveness for sins committed.

  50. Secondly, when a person calls for the elders to come he is to realize that such a call must not be a whim. He should earnestly ask the Holy Spirit to give clear direction in this matter that God's will be done. This could mean that the service may not have a happy ending. In fact, trauma or death may follow.
