  4. Symbolism • The principal elements are the laying-on of hands, prayer said over the person • anointing of the forehead and hands with olive oil • Ideally, Anointing of the Sick is to be celebrated along with the Sacrament of Penance and reception of the Eucharist.

  5. Effects • Restoration of health if it is good for the salvation of the person’s soul • Preparation for passage to eternal life

  6. Recipients • Is this a life-threatening or grave disease? • Is the person about to undergo surgery for a serious illness? • Is the person of advanced age? • Has a fatal illness become more serious?
