  2. Topics / Themes • Friendship • Loyalty • Pride • Hospitality • Generosity • Forgiveness • Friends always help friends. • Pride will always lead to a fall. • Friends are loyal even if it causes personal discomfort. • When a friend realizes his/her error, others should forgive.

  3. Assignments • Figurative Language • Choose two examples of each of the figurative language techniques we have discussed in class from the novel. Copy the example from the story, cite it, explain how it exemplifies the figurative language you identified. • Simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and idiom. • Poetry (choose one) • Write a poem for two of the four main characters (Mole, Rat, Toad, Badger) describing them physically, emotionally and behaviorally. • Write an acrostic poem for all of the main characters. Include specific details from the story.

Examples • Figurative language • “They were strolling down the road, when from far behind them they heard a faint hum like the buzz of a bee” (24). • Kenneth Grahame uses a simile to compare the sound of the coming car to the sound of a bee buzzing. • Poetry “Round face with a twinkle in its eye” (2) Always willing to teach new things, Thoughtful of the feelings of his friends Take your time to think about the character before you start writing your poem.
