Government of Total Control • Totalitarianism: total, centralized state control over every aspect of public & private life • Totalitarian states use terror & violence to force obedience and to crush any opposition • They use indoctrination to mold people’s minds (glorify the leader & his policies) • They use propaganda & censorship to sway people’s beliefs & actions (no dissent allowed) • They create “enemies of the state” to blame for any problems (usually religious or ethnic groups)

Stalin Takes Control • Stalin wanted to create a perfect Communist state in Russia (totalitarian state) • He used propaganda (distorted information) & censorship to influence people’s thoughts • He used indoctrination (education, training) & persecution to mold the population • He used the Great Purge to eliminate any opposition (real or imagined)

Stalin’s Plans for Rebuilding Russia’s Economy • He installed command economy - government controls all aspects of economy • He set up Five-Year Plans (impossible economic goals) to improve economy • He set up collective farming (government-owned farms) / did produce successful results • Peasants resisted losing land (kulaks-wealthy Ukrainian peasants) / millions died

Life Under Josef Stalin • Freedom was limited (people had few rights) • Goods were in short supply (5-Year Plans) • Dissent (resistance) was prohibited • Need for skilled workers did promote higher education & technical training • Women gained equal rights with men & entered fields of engineering, science, & medicine (75%) • Women required to still do all housework & raise loyal communist children
