  2. Goal Of Indiana University HPNAP Grants Immerse the end user into a VR enhanced, cinematic and interactive tour of the Mayan cultural heritage. Texture their experience with computer generated modeling of architecture and artifacts. Listen to contextual rich narration and authentic sounds. Integrate this experience with interactivities, that are user-directed and information driven. Offer this experience on a CDROM and via the internet.

A Scalable Immersive Virtual Environments for 3D Exploration via High Performance Network HPNAP GRANT awarded 2000 Having the experience from the previous project - the Chichen Itza, a virtual tour, funded by HPNAP in 1999, this project will build propose a – Scalable Immersive Virtual Environment (SIVE), available to support more complicated navigation routines and multiple platforms for 3D exploration via Internet 2. This project goal is to develop a virtual reality world of Uxmal,Mexico. where users can learn and discover ancient Mayan architecture, artifacts, and culture by navigating in designed 3D virtual environment.

Governors palacearchitectural drawing and model SIVE provides an innovative architecture to demonstrate IU’s capability in transmitting 3D information among IU in-campus or off-campus via Internet 2. With centralized information management server, many users are able to navigate using their own workstation. The user will be able to explore and communicate with 3D visualization data, which has been limited to the high-end facilities such as the immersadesk and Cave.

One of the innovative designs in this project is how to make systems optimally and intelligently adjust the image rendering resolution and have multi-modality for object representation during users' 3-D interaction. It involves the backgrounds lower resolution representation using plane image for fast display and foreground (near scene) using geometrical object rendering for preserving details.   13. Uxmal a virtual tour The control area would allow navigation by a hierarchical system. Students and educators choose graphics and "hot spots" within the VR components. This would allow non-linear navigation. Clicking on a graphic would link to related or expanded information, while VR components would expand the VR view for an immersive experience, allowing Spatial navigation.

  14. Uxmal VR • The system is designed to support complicated navigation routines for 3-D exploration of Mayan ruins and should be portable to multiple platforms via Internet 2. The Abilene network will be used for real-time delivery of high-bandwidth 3D rendering image through central server and streams to geographically scattered users for exploration.

  15. Navigational Flow and Exploration Plan: Through a non-linear flow of navigational, information of Uxmal will engage learners in a broad range of disciplines. Each area of interactive learning will feature choices of animation, graphics, video, streaming video and VRML Users choose a menu of:       • Art and Archaeology • Culture: people, legends, symbols • History • Science: astronomy • Environment
