  1. Janelle Rentschler Final Report on Mentoring and Observations

  2. Mentoring

  3. Mentoring Report • I mentored two different groups of teachers. • I offered a morning and after school session. • Morning Participants: Mrs. Warner, Title One; Miss Yettee, Title One, Mrs. Penny Rentschler, second grade; Mrs. Wiltgen, third grade • Afternoon Participants: Mrs. Kock, first grade; Mrs. Blau, music; Mrs. Person, first grade; Mrs. Kruse, fourth grade • Each group met for 45 minutes to an hour three times.

  4. Focus • The first mentoring sessions were similar. • I introduced the blog and wiki and discussed educational uses of each. • I showed them my Jing which introduced the Web 2.0 tool Wordle. • Each participant created a wordle, and we discussed the uses in our various classrooms such as vocabulary, states and capitals, spelling, and sight words. • Each group chose a focus for the remaining sessions.

  5. Morning Session • The morning session chose to create a blog. • The second session consisted of creating a Google Account and setting up their blogs. • Their assignment was to create two new posts. • Their final session focused on uploading images and other files to their blog. • We also created a link from our West Lyon web page to their blogs.

  6. Afternoon session • The teachers in this session wanted to focus on finding online videos. • In the following two sessions, we searched Teacher Tube and Sqool Tube. • We used Zamzar to convert the videos and then downloaded them to their classroom computers. • In the final session, they chose to create a blog. • Both groups asked for additional sessions throughout the year.

  7. Observations

  8. Elementary observations • Resource Room Second Grade Math This Smart board lesson reviewed the skill of rounding numbers. The teacher used online worksheets to review this skill. Each student had several opportunities to go up to the Smart board to round numbers. The teacher reviewed another skill of counting money. He used the internet to show images of real coins to count.

  9. Elementary Observation • SCI Room with a sixth grade math student The lesson was adding fractions with like and unlike denominators. He had created a Smart notebook lesson that went through the steps of adding with like and unlike denominators. During guided practice, the student answered the math problems on the Smart board.

  10. Elementary Observation • Sixth grade World History This lesson was about mummification. The teacher went through the process of mummification using the Smart board. He showed pictures of real mummies. He finished the lesson by showing a video demonstrating a modern mummification on a body that was donated to science.

  11. Middle school observation • Seventh Grade Math The teacher had a Smart notebook lesson prepared. His objective was to have the students identify, plot, and label points on coordinate planes. He had captured images of a GPS from his online textbook to introduce the lesson. He taught the lesson and each student had the opportunity to come up to the Smart board to locate points on the coordinate plane.

  12. High School Observation • High School Chemistry-sophomores/juniors The objective was to have the students classify matter. She used the Smart board to display her notes and to show images of various solutions which students classified.

  13. High school Observation • Biology-Freshman The objective for this class was to classify leaves. The teacher found a website containing images of different leaves and descriptions of their characteristics. Students would identify and classify leaves after viewing the image on the Smart board.
