COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING TASK Using the piece of rope provided, do the following: • Pass the right end over the left and then under it. • Then take the left over the right and under it. • Check it – the two loops should slide on each other. • Tighten by pulling both the strands on each side, or just the live ends, but be sure it tightens properly. • To be doubly sure finish off the knot by making a • half-hitch with the live ends on either side of the knot.

  7. A PEOPLE WITHOUT A VISION SOON PERISH An organizagion or movement without a vision will soon fade away. An organization or movement with a vision that is too general or broad will soon lose its power A vision build on a deep immersion with the oppressed and that emerges out of that immersion, can help move toward a true transformation of people and of societies.

  8. MOTIVATION IDEOLOGY VISION

Motivation : --the reason why we act. --what gives us the power and courage to act (mother saving child) --Our knowledge and skill can be controlled by either a negative or a positive motivation depending on our world view and the set of values we live by. --For example, photography (a skill) can be used to either raise global awareness of an injustice in society, or to simply make money. It can be used to help build justice, or it can be used to exploit and humiliate other people.

Ideology and Vision: --surround and generate every action we take. --They create our motivation which in turn guides the way we use our knowledge and skills. --Our ideology is our most sincere belief about what problems exist around us, the root causes of those problems and the process we need to go through to transform those problems in positive ways. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --Our vision is our detailed concept of the way a more just and sustainable society could look. --Ideology and vision are formulated by our analysis of past and present realities. --The more we study and analyze the past and the present, the clearer and more directional our ideology and vision become.

  11. How is a personal or organizational ideology developed? Of what value is a personal or organizational ideology? Is it necessary for an organization to develop a detailed ideology? Why or why not? Is there a danger in having an ideology that is too detailed?

Creating an ideology for change (Burma Example) • Want to be proactive rather than reactive • Want to find root cause of conflict to be proactive • Immersion with IDPs in order to build the ideology on their hopes and dreams. • Look at history of conflict – it began after democratic elections • Collect info on economic, politics, military, etc for several months before planning • Analyze this info constantly • Look for weaknesses • Military controls religious, social, economic, ideological and political areas • Weakness however is in economic • Export rice • Tourism • Gems, jade, teak • Gas • Develop ideology paper to direct work • Identify ethnic chauvinism as root problem • Vision for the kind of society we want to build • A strategy for how we can get there

  14. Ideology vision Root causes of injustice History The more you study the history of the conflict and immerse yourself in the lives of the most oppressed, the more clearly you will know what you must do together with the oppressed for transformation from injustice to justice.

GROUP WORK • Appoint a group facilitator and a note taker • The facilitator should make certain everyone in the groups shares ideas • Discuss the following question: • For two and a half weeks we have been discussing many different issues with different resource persons. Also we have had a field trip. Many different topics and issues were discussed. How do you see all of these learnings connecting together?

  17. REFLECTIVE ESSAY (A time of dialogue) Personal transformation requires that we : FEEL THINK ACT The purpose of a workshop like this is to help you feel, think act. Review your notes and read your journal again. Then write an essay about : What you have been made to feel during this time together. What new thoughts, ideas and vision for your work and involvement have you developed? Be specific. Do you forsee any challenges or obstacles? Have you experienced any personal transformation? Do you have any new visions for the transformation of your society? If you do not want your essay on the blog, you should write “confidential” on the top, or you can use a pen name if you like.
