  2. Introduction: Community Diversity First of all, what does community diversity mean?Diversity means differences and community is if two or more population lives in one place together. So, together it means differences of people that are living together in the same place. Not only physical differences, like appearance, but also non-physical like, culture, tradition, and etc. Describing the community diversity in the world would be a lot to describe, so I’ll short it down to the “differences” in Indonesia. Why did I choose Indonesia? Not only because I live there, but also Indonesia has many interesting cultures and traditions from almost every island in the country. Not only that, there are more languages spoken around the country than just one people use everyday, which is called Bahasa Daerah. “Daerah” means region, so that means that every region has one extra language.

  3. Indonesia Indonesia is a country in south-east Asia. It has over 17.000 islands and is divided into 33 provinces straddling the equator. The five biggest islands are Kalimantan, Papua, Sulawesi, Sumatra, and Java. Java is the most populate island because there are more industrial fields and also more job fields on this island than on any other. Every island has different traditional specialties such as: • Art (Music and Dance) • Clothes • Food

  4. Art There are many different kinds of art in Indonesia: Music, music instruments and dance. The music instrument that comes from Java and Bali (there are two kinds) is the gamelan. Gamelans are sets of bronze or iron instruments supported by carved wooden racks. A Sundanese gamelan usually consists of a core group of metallophones (saron), horizontal gong-chime sets (bonang), vertically suspended gongs (go'ong), and a set of barrel drums (kendang). It’s performed for entertainment, as dance accompany and sometimes also in traditional ceremonies. Sundanese (West Java) Gamelan Balinese Gamelan

  5. Art: Angklung The Angklung is a Sundanese (West Java) music instrument. It is made from two bamboo tubes connected in a frame to hold it together. The tubes are carved so that they have a resonant pitch when struck. The two tubes are carved so that the have a resonant pitch when struck. The base of the frame is held with one hand while the other hand shakes the instrument from one side to another. How to hold an Angklung Step 1: Put your forefinger and middle finger (of the left hand) in the spaces like on the picture above. Step 2: Put your forefinger of the right hand into the tube on the bottom and your thumb outside to shake the Angklung. Tip: Shake it fast for better sound.

  6. Art: Traditional Dances I’m going to mention a few of the traditional dances I know: • TariLenso or in English called, Lenso Dance is a traditional dance from Minahasa, Sulawesi that is mostly danced by younger people or teenager. The word Lenso here means handkerchief. This dance is performed on big events and parties. All kinds of it, weddings, new year, and more. This dance is also a ‘partner searching’ event for the single ones. • TariReog( Ponorogo) is a dance from East Java. Ponorogo is the more specific are where Reog is from. Modern Reog is performed on weddings and national holidays. Reog is one of Indonesia’s local culture that still consists of very strong mystical things. • TariMerak or in English called The Dance of The Peacock is a female dance. It comes from West Java and is created by a choreographer in the 1950s named RadjenTjetjepSomantri. In this dance, the women dresses up like peacocks in colorful costumes. 8. Batik Pattern The most popular, that even went international and a lot of people heard of it is the Batik with its unique patterns. There are many different kinds of batik and it comes from different parts of Indonesia. Batik can be used in both, formal occasions and un-formal events or just as everyday clothes. In some schools, they use batik as one of their daily uniforms. Not only clothes but the Batik pattern can also be used for bags, pencil cases, blankets, and many more. Picture source: Google

  9. Culinary Food from Indonesia, most of them are spicy. Some of them are very spicy and some are just mild and rich with all kinds of flavors. There are so many kinds of food and beverages from every island and every island has their own special something in their food. I’ll start by naming a few. • Let’s start with the kind of food that can be found in (probably) all parts of it, which is also my personal favorite. Sate or Satay. What is it? It’s a meat dish. The meat (lamb, beef, or chicken) is stabbed with a thin long sate stick. The stick is usually made from wood, but if the sate is made at home, some use metal skewer so the could use it over again. The meat is then grilled on a “Sate Griller” which uses coal for the fire (in the traditional ways). But these days, some people more prefer using electric grills for their sate. If the grilling is done, the sate will be served with peanut sauce, soy sauce, and of course rice or rice cake (lontong).

  10. Culinary All Around Indonesia • Konro Soup A dish that comes from the Bugis tradition and Makassar. It’s a dark brown-blackish rib soup served with small rice cakes that have been cut before. The dark color in the soup comes from “kluwek” which is originally dark. • Tumpeng A way to serve rice and the side dishes in a cone form. The rice used is usually yellow rice, which is rice steamed with turmeric to get the yellow color. The cone shaped rice will be placed in the middle and the side dishes around it. Tumpeng is mostly served on special occasions or celebration like birthdays or weddings. Kluwek

  11. Sweet Cold Beverages After eating a nice dish, how bout a sweet beverage and dessert? These are a few from so many to come of traditional beverages, cakes and more. • Es Campur Es Campur literally means ‘mixed ice’. Not the ice cream kind of ice, but ice cubes. Shredded little pieces of ice in a bowl mixed with sweet milk, syrup (mostly ‘pandan’ flavor is used) coconut shavings, avocado, nangka (jackfruit) and several kinds of jelly. It’s a very colorful dessert from Sunda (West Java) that can be found in every Sundanese restaurant as beverage or dessert. • Es Cendol Is a traditional beverage from Java, the word “cendol” means bump. It refers to the bumpy sensation when the green jelly passes through the mouth. The basic ingredient of Cendol is coconut milk, mixed with brown sugar to get the sweetness and brownish color. Also, the green jelly that is made from rice flour and green food coloring pandan flavor, and all that mixed with ice to make it cold, and there you have a nice sweet Es Cendol.
