  1. University and Society: Course Focus: Learning concepts and arguments on: Contradictions between academic ideals and learning on the one hand & media representation and popular culture on the other.

Assignments: (*to be sent to me by e-mail & uploaded to turnitin) One essay Framework and Final essay using the framework for the whole year: (see the list of topics)* Evaluation Term 1*Essay Term I: Framework of concepts and themes on a topic (see details on Topics and related readings) 15% (Due Dec 2) In-class multiple choice test 20% (Nov 25, 2014) Class attendance, presentation & participation (Please set aside weekly hours for preparation on class readings and lectures): 15% (5+5+5%) For Class attendance & participation, see criteria of evaluation posted on the course web. ----------------------------- 50%

Final Essay including its presentation: 20% (Essay 15%; pres. 5%) (Due April 10, 2015 - Essay to be uploaded to Turnitin , and a copy of the final essay to be sent to me by the deadline, via e-mail) In-class multiple-choice test 20% (March 31, 2015) Attendance and Participation 10% ------------------ Term II total 50% ----------------- Term I & II Total 100%

  4. Essay: Choose your topic from the list. The essay should address the following question: Why and how are there contradictions between popular cultural representations (on gender, race, intelligence, jobs, etc.,) and the academic ideals, values & views learned/ taught in the university?

  5. Readings, lectures, visual materials, concepts and theories • 1. Will be on the tests • 2. Relevant concepts need to be integrated into your Framework and the final essay

  6. One Course kit (for term 1 & 2) is available in York Book Store, $32.

  7. Select your topic in the first two weeks of classes and send me your choice of topic by e-mail. I can be of help in designing your framework. *Write a brief paragraph (max150 words) explaining your focus and e-mail it to me by Sept 30 for a quick feedback. Weekly class readings are posted on our course webpage. • In class discussions and the essay, the main focus will be: • Applying Foucault’s arguments to the university as a social institution: what is Foucault’s view of society? • Examining how the university is portrayed in the popular cultural (movies, media, etc.) vis-à-vis critical culture (e.g., cartoons, lyrics, etc) . • How do powerful social forces, e.g. media, society, workplace, etc., shape the university’s administration, faculty and students.

What is higher education doing with a corporate business paradigm of profit? • Sample essay topics on this issue: • Commodification of knowledge • Students’ views on education and work • University and corporate interests • American cultural hegemony • Who controls Knowledge: the State or Corporations? • Role of technology in commodification

  11. How has commodification influenced the values of education? • Educational content has been profoundly • changed delivering consumer satisfaction • Commodity • Branded. • Sponsored research • Distance education • “Click” universities generate no peer effects.

  16. Term I Framework: Arguments from relevant readings assigned for each topic. The final essay will apply your framework on the topic you have chosen, to popular media materials you have found. Cartoons criticize such popular cultural representations of education. University, schools, etc. These materials will help you critically examine how powerful social forces, e.g. media, society, workplace, etc., shape the university.
