  2. What is Stress? Stress is the reaction of the body and mind to challenges and demands everyday. It’s a normal part of life. Stress occurs to everyone.

  3. Taking a test Enduring the death of a loved one An upcoming sports competition Having a large work load The need to be a perfectionist The ending of a relationship What are some things that Cause Stress?

  4. What is a Stressor? A Stressor is anything that causes stress. Stressors include people, objects, places, events and situations. • Biological Stressors: stressors from illnesses, injuries or disabilities • Environmental Stressors: pollution, natural disasters, crowding, poverty, etc. • Cognitive stressors: a thinking stressor such as the way you see a situation, or the way it effects the you or the world. • Personal Behavior stressor: could be when drugs cause a negative reaction to your body. • Life situation stressors: death of a loved one, divorce of parents, etc.

  5. Body Stress Responses The two systems of the body that cause responses to stress is the nervous system and the endocrine system. The body’s response to stress is involuntary. There are three stages to stress: Alarm, Resistance and Fatigue.

  7. Psychosomatic Response Psychosomatic response is a physical reaction from stress. • Examples: • Headaches • Asthma • High Blood Pressure • Weak Immune System

  8. Examples: Focusing problems Mood swings Risk of drug use Mental and Emotional effects

  9. Stress can actually motivate a person to accomplish their goals. For some people, stress makes a person perform better. It’s not all that bad

  10. How can you manage stress?

  11. Preventing stress • Be organized and plan ahead. • Get enough sleep. • Do physical activities regularly. • Eat a balanced meal everyday. • Avoid using drugs.

  12. What not to do • Smoke • Excessive drinking • Over-eating and under- eating • Sleeping too much • Spacing out while watching TV on the computer • Taking out stress on others • Taking pills or drugs to relax • Separating yourself from family and friends • Procrastinating

  13. Managing Stress • Do activities that you enjoy. • Relax (deep breathing, stretching, etc. • Laugh • Think positively. • Find someone you trust for support.
