  2. Thanks for being here tonight! Choosing the BEST classes for your son or daughter MATTERS • How do we know? Ask someone. • When asked what would they have done differently in high school, a common response from students is: • “I would have challenged myself more in high school.” • When asked about helping their child schedule classes, a common response is: • “I really wasn’t sure how to help my child choose the best courses, especially my first child.”

  4. Scheduling Process • Students are spoken to by grade level. • Class selections sheets are handed out. • Students sign up for classes and get teacher approval where needed. • Class selection sheets are signed by parents. • Students turn in sheets to their AT teacher by February 14, 2013.

  6. Rigor and College Prep • Course Selections • Students should challenge themselves to the most demanding courses to their ability • Teacher input is vital in the process

  7. Types of Classes Required Core Classes • Every required credit must be completed before a student graduates. Elective Classes • Classes that students choose to take. • They may be in a core area or a different department. • Elective classes are not guaranteed.

  8. Entry to Vocational Programs Applications must be submitted for entry into vocational programs. • Health Sciences apply in 9th grade. • HVAC • Welding • Carpentry • Welding • Automotive • Fire Safety and Management apply in 10th grade.

  9. Categories of Classes • Regular – 4.0 • Exposes student to mandated state benchmarks • Honors – 5.0 • Extends the depth of study beyond a regular class • Advanced Placement (AP) – 6.0 • College level course • Students are required to take the AP Exam

AP vs. Dual Credit? • AP Courses: • Curriculum mandated by the College Board • Exam administered in Spring • 35 dollar exam fee • Exam score determines college credit • Modified grading scale (90-100 = A) • Dual Credit Courses: • Student “dual enrolled” in MCHS AND college • Curriculum driven by local college and high school • Must pay the college fee • Course grade determines college credit • MCHS grading scale (93-100 = A)

Frequently Asked Questions • Is foreign language required for graduation? • No but 2 credits of the same foreign language are required to enter 4-year colleges. • Will my student get all the classes he/she selects? • Effort is made to accommodate every student’s requests, however …… • Can my senior get any job and co-op?
