HISTORY Beginning of 1920 – Higher courses of Study were begun in Kaunas 16 02 1922 – Establishment of the University of Lithuaniain Kaunas 07 06 1930 – The University was namedVytautas Magnus University 31 10 1950 – The University was re-organized into Kaunas Polytechnic Institute and the Kaunas Medical Institute 28 04 1989 – The act of re-establishment of Vytautas Magnus Universitywas signed 16 02 2007 – 85th Anniversary of Vytautas Magnus University 29 04 2009 – 20th Anniversary of re-established Vytautas Magnus University

GOVERNANCE • The Senate is the highest self-governing body of the university which serves a term of fives years. • The Council is an institution of public observation and care which consists of 18 representatives from the university, Lithuanian science, culture, economics organizations, government and local government. • Rector’s Council (consists of 21 members)

SPECIAL FEATURES OF VMU • Graduates with abroad humanistic orientation for Lithuania's needs in research, culture, education and economy. • Academic freedom as one of the mostimportant principles of University's activity. • Languages. The students are offered to learn up to 17 languages, including Latvian, Japanese, Turkish, Ancient Greek, Norwergian, Finnish, Portuguese,etc. • Studying at VMU also gives a great opportunity to learn Lithuanian language, become aquainted with Lithuanian culture, literature, art, history and politics - the university offers Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course for foreign students since 1998. • Establishing successful international relations.
