  1. Biotechnology By: Ms. Aguilar

  2. DO NOW KWL: What is DNA? What is Biotechnology?

  3. Engage: Glow in the dark trees to replace streetlights? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUs7k_cEcRc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMDiRKootnI

  4. Explore GMOs mini-poster

  5. Objective Students will be able to analyze models and interpret graphs by answering questions based on genetically modified organisms. SWBAT develop a logical argument if they are for or against GMO foods using CER format and a 4 point rubric

  6. What is Biotechnology? Bio = Life Technology = the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes Biotechnology = is the use of living organisms to develop or make products.

  7. If all of us have DNA, what makes us different from other living organisms? Remember DNA is the code, the instructions for how to build us. All organisms have DNA, but the order of the nitrogen bases are different

  8. Mix and Matching DNA Since life is all made up of all the same “stuff”, or DNA, it is possible to mix and match DNA from different organisms We can mix and match our DNA, more specifically, we can mix and match our genes. We call this genetic engineering

  9. Transgenic organisms Once you cut out your DNA (or gene) of interest, you can put the plasmid into another organism (like bacteria or plants) The organism that gets the new DNA, reads the code and makes proteins. The organism with new DNA iscalled a transgenic organism.

  10. How can we use biotechnology? We can… • make medicines like antibiotics • make vaccines to protect us from infection • make hormones like insulin • improve crops and control weeds • improve the nutritional value of our food • create new, cleaner fuel • use microorganisms to clean up pollution

  11. Active Practice Time! Let’s take a closer look at how biotechnology is used to make genetically modified organisms. GMO pogil and essay

  12. GMOs and Genetically Modified FoodsThe good..The bad..The ugly?
