  3. Importance of Secondary Education • Secondary education is minimum qualification to prepare the youth of the country as trained manpower • Secondary education also forms the basis of further skill development required for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh

  4. Problems of Secondary Education in Rural High Schools In Bangladesh • Many rural families cannot afford to send their children to high schools and continue with their education • Gender disparity in school-going children • Low quality of teaching by teachers and thus low level of learning by students • Lack of affordability/opportunity for assistance • Inadequate school infrastructure • Inadequate school facilities • Insufficient books and equipment

  5. Our Programs • Student Empowerment Program • Teacher Empowerment Program • School Empowerment Program • Community Linkage Empowerment

Student Empowerment Programs: • Scholarships, • Tutoring in the high school entering level, Grade VI, • Extra-curricular activities through student led clubs, Participation in National competitions in Science, Math and Language, Performance Award for all round competence, • Volunteering in social work

  7. Teacher Empowerment Programs: • Teachers’ training, • Performance award for the teachers, • Best performance school awards, • Professional day for the teachers and Participation in seminars/ workshops.

  8. School Empowerment Programs: • Upgrading of science and computer labs and library facilities, • Upgrading of Vocational Lab, projects to generate funds from internal resources and creating endowment fund.

  9. Community Linkage Empowerment • Promotion of parents- teachers meetings • Involving community leaders in business and public affairs in school programs • Connecting with former students • Promoting the schools to engage in socially beneficial programs • Project based approach to solicit assistance from community

Program Delivery to Date: Some Statistics • Schools supported: 75 • Scholarship: About 7000 School students • Additionally some 900 college scholarship • Tutoring: About 15,000 students • Additionally about 1200 children in 18 Pre-Schools • Teachers Training in Science, English, Math and Computer: about 700 teachers • Lab, Math Olympiad, computer and library support: about 30 schools

Sustainability • The sustainability program has the following elements: • Bottom up approach – Five-year Perspective Plan designed by the stakeholders of the schools • Partnership in of Program financing • Community Service and Community Linkage • Endowment • Generation of funds through local resources

  17. Employability To overcome the inefficiency of the education system, VAB has the following programs: • Career advice for students • Vocational training for students interested in early entry into job market

VAB’s Vision for the next Five years • Self- sustained improvement capability of schools • Quadruple the number of schools in clusters of Five • Ready access to ICT in education • Increased opportunity for Mathematics, Science, ICT and Language Education • Extensive collaboration with related organizations

VAB has the proven package of programs and more than a decade of experience 3. VAB program emphasizes in addition to academic excellence acquisition of citizenship and moral values through student led activities and creates awareness of career opportunities

VAB is working with existing schools in public system complementing the government program in secondary education and setting priorities conforming to the education policy of Bangladesh. 4. VAB’s main support base is individual philanthropy  5. VAB looks for large Institutional support to realize its vision to expand in all the Upazillas in the country
