  1. Stages of Grief

  2. The five stages often experienced when faced with death or impending death • Not a complete list of all possible emotions that could be felt • Can occur in any order • Since reactions to loss differ among individuals, not everyone experiences all of these emotions

  3. 1. Denial • Trying to shut out reality • Denying the magnitude of the situation • Developing a false, preferable reality • Happens because the reality of loss is hard to face

  4. 2. Anger • Misplaced feelings of rage and envy • Hard to care for • Directed at themselves or others (usually the ones closest to them)

  5. 3. Bargaining • Usually, people bargain with God/a higher power, asking for a longer life in return for a change in lifestyle • “I swear, if you let me/him/her live, I’ll stop drinking” • Or they will use any other valuable bargaining chip • “I’ll give my life savings if I could just have one more day with him/her” • Comes from an understanding of death, but a wish to buy more time

  6. 4. Depression • Life seems pointless • Things begin to lose meaning • Griever may remain silent, refuse visitors, spend a lot of time crying/moping • This disconnect helps grievers avoid further pain/loss

  7. 5. Acceptance • Coming to terms with the situation • Calmness and a stable mindset • “Things are going to be okay”
