  1. Who is Baba Yaga? • A Russian Witch • Known for scaring children • Lives deep in the forest • Legend says she kidnaps children and eats them.

  2. Where does she appear in Russian Culture ? Baba Yaga appears in Russian folktale. Because she is known to be evil and scary, parents use her folktale to get their children out the forest. Baba Yaga is so famous in Russian culture that if a person were to see a witch in any type of art, one can automatically assume that the witch in the art work is Baba Yaga.

  3. What kind of person is she? Baba Yaga is supernatural figure in the Russian folktale. She is the type of person who eats children (cannibal), which makes her a evil, inhumane, and cruel person.

  4. Where does she live? -Baba Yaga lives deep in the forest. She isolates herself from the everybody and they mommas.

  5. Fun Facts about where she lives: • Her house is a hut standing on chicken legs, and it is surrounded by bones of victims. • In order to have Baba Yaga come out of her hut, one must say a special chant: “Izboushka, Izboushka!,” which means- “turn thy back to the forest and thy front to us.”

  7. Baba Yaga’s Appearance Baba Yaga looks like a deformed, elderly, old lady. She does not look like a witch because she does not wear a hat and does not travel in a broom.

  8. How does she get around? • She travels in a large mortar with her knees almost touching her chin, and she flies across the forest with a pestle.

  9. What other cultures have similar witches? The Famous American folktale “Hansel and Gretel” is a similar story. The story is about a little girl and boy who go into the forest and find a house, and then later realize that the house belongs to a witch. The witch feeds them, so she can later eat them. Baba Yaga eats kids just like the evil witch from Hansel and Gretel.
