Introduction • Mammography is a radiographic modality used for detecting breast pathology and cancer • Breast cancer screening - depend on x-ray mammography because it is a low-cost, low-radiation-dose procedure that has the sensitivity for early detection and improved treatment • In 1992, the federal Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) came into existence to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography with optimal patient care and follow-up

  3. Mammography Imaging Modalities • Ultrasound Breast Imaging - used for differentiating cysts (typically benign) from solid masses (often cancerous), which have similar appearances on the mammogram - provides biopsy needle guidance for extracting breast tissue specimens • MRI - has wonderful tissue contrast sensitivity - useful for evaluating silicone implants - accurately assess the stage of breast cancer involvement
