  2. HOW IT BEGAN—2011/2012 • 6 Sections—Green Construction and Science & Sustainability • Approximately 150 ninth grade students • New scheduling—4x4, A/B Block • Opening Day Orientation—Block A students (1/2 day) • Opening Day—September 8, 2011

Day 2—September 9, 2011 • Orientation—Block B students (1/2 day) • The Dreaded Call—September 11, 2011 • Willingboro HS would be closed week of September 12, 2011 until further notice because of building problems • All staff to report September 13-16, 2011 to develop common objectives for “generic” classroom instruction to begin September 19, 2011

The First Day—September 19, 2011Because of the building closure: • Opening day of interim curriculum • Students grouped by grade level instead of subject • Teachers change classes, not students with generic instruction in their individual curriculum • Instruction in Green Construction and Science & Sustainability was negligible. Students were not assigned to the original classes and teachers were teaching all grade levels

Third Revision—October 5, 2011 • Staff notified that beginning October 11, 2011, new schedule to be implemented • Split block sessions of A/B with Seniors/Juniors in AM and Sophomores/Freshmen in PM • Attempt to get as many students as possible back into original schedules • Six classes in Green Construction and Science & Sustainability with 93 students enrolled

Fourth & Final Revision —November 14, 2011 • Students return to home school—Willingboro HS • New schedule, new classes (attempt to schedule students according to their original schedule) • Six sections Green Construction and Science & Sustainability with 87 students • One Green Construction instructor and two Science and Sustainability instructors • CTE staff allowed to teach 6 classes per day according to contract

CURRENT IMPLEMENTATION NOVEMBER 14, 2011 • Building Science Training Week at the Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA) Philadelphia, PA • First day of new curriculum and schedule • Mr. Nathaniel Davis representing Green Construction • Mr. Alan Springel • New member to WHS Staff • Background in • Sustainable and renewable resources • Electrical construction • Lighting efficiency • Certificate in Energy • Physics Major • Will be part of Green POS during 2012-2013 GRANT FUNDING (2011) • Two members of team attended NJ’s Green Program of Study Summer Institute on June 27-July 1, 2011 • Supplies and kits purchased dealing with Fuel Cells, Solar Power, Bio-Energy, Renewable Energy • Two members of the team attended Green Program of Study Building Science Training Week at ECA • Members commuted due to travel restrictions regarding budgeting • Clarification required for Director/District • District did pay substitutes from District funding

  8. “GREEN TEAM” MEMBERS Nathaniel Davis—Green Construction • Continued course work at the Cloud Institute for Sustainability and Green Schools Leadership Institute (GLSI) • Completed two-day grant writing course offered by EIRC • Attended Green Technology open house funded by NASA at Burlington County College • Began process to develop a plan to prepare students for articulation at BCC • Partnered with GSLI. As a result, students will learn to “Green” WHS • Implementing sustainable methods for capturing rain water (for later use) • Reducing, reusing and recycling our paper consumption (also cafeteria trash--greenhouse) • How to reduce electrical demand

CURRENT SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY PROJECT • Describe and analyze the Brazilian city of Curitiba and the Indian city of Kerala looking for Sustainable Characteristics • Ways of living • Political structures • Processes for decision making • Community visions • Sustainability indicators • Community and individual activities • Economic endeavors • Models of transportation • Students to develop their own Sustainable Community. Student are to determine: • How do people work and relax? • The governmental structure • How does the community make decisions? • What will the community look like in the future? • How will the community preserve their resources? • What are community activities? • How does the community create wealth? • How do individuals create wealth?

  10. “GREEN TEAM” CONTINUED William Vis & Matthew Williams—Science & Sustainability • Have started a recycling campaign for the school • Bottles and cans • Snack bags • Paper • Batteries • Students have developed Recycling Posters to be duplicated by District Print Shop and posted around the school • Working on “Life Cycle of Consumer Goods” • Student research on extending life of products by repurposing • Having students develop a “New Life” of an item by making new items • Presentation of products

IN THE WORKS • Recruitment • 8th grade orientation for upcoming Freshmen • Green Technology Brochure distributed • Parent presentation to follow for 8th grade students • Virtues of continuing Green POS curriculum reinforced with current students • Teentech 2012—Connecting Girls and Technology • Project of the American Association of University Women, NJ, Inc. (AAUW-NJ) in collaboration with TCNJ • Field trip to relate Green Careers and STEM skills to connect young women to high demand careers where women are still underrepresented

DOWN THE ROAD • Opportunity for Rising Seniors—Rowan Aim High Science and Technology Academy • Rowan University hosting 2nd Annual Aim High Science & Technology Summer Academy • To engage rising high school seniors in college readiness, leadership, technology, and science activities • Program is of NO EXPENSE to the student or family • Participants will receive three college credits at the conclusion • Current students not ready to participate, but will become part of future instructional program

  13. WHERE IT WILL GO—2012/2013 • Grant Funding—2012/2013 • Funding to pay for 3 staff to attend summer workshop for Grade 10 Curriculum (full amount) • District funds proposed in District budget for 2012/2013 for curriculum materials and course supplies • Purchase orders for the 2012/2013 school year already written for purchase of materials for 10th grade Curriculum (2011/2012 budget)

  14. UPCOMING PLANS • Appointment of new Project Director of the Green POS due to retirement • Implementation of Grade 10 Program, Introduction to Green Construction (Nathaniel Davis) • Utilize Mr. William Vis, Mr. Matthew Williams and Mr. Alan Springel to continue with 9th Grade Science and Sustainability • Utilize Mr. Springel due to background in Science and Sustainability and Energy to co-teach with Mr. Davis within the proposed unit of Building Science

  15. PLANS CONTINUED • As a member of the NJ Technology and Engineers Association and Cloud Institute, Mr. Davis will have access to green curriculum and lesson plans • Development of a “Green Greenhouse”. Will utilize passive solar principles and a sustainable method of nutrient delivery utilizing a hydroponic system • Seeking District approval to develop a rooftop garden • Working in conjunction with community members to develop a District-wide recycling program • Preparation of student task force in year 2 to audit, analyze and implement energy efficiency and conservation measures in Willingboro Community
