  2. Overview "Knowledge is the prime asset of a software developing firm". An introduction to ‘The Informal way of Knowledge sharing’. This paper shows how the success of an informal knowledge sharing tool, called WOX - Well Of Experience, makes Computas, a software development firm, think seriously about the need of good in-house Knowledge management techniques.

  3. Why Knowledge Management? Knowledge management has attracted a number of industries from different domains. As per authors view, this field draws attention of software developer firms for following facts, • Software Engineering is knowledge-intensive work. The main asset in software companies is what has been called the intellectual capital • In order to improve software development, the management of knowledge has to be improved as well.

Something about knowledge… Two main strategies for knowledge management : • Codification • Personalization Information Categories : • Enlightenment • Problem understanding • Instrumental • Factual • Conformational • Projective • Personal or political Types of knowledge repositories : 1. External knowledge repositories 2. Structured internal knowledge repositories 3. Informal internal knowledge repositories

  6. Research study The company: Computas software consulting company, founded in 1985. -Expertise in developing knowledge-based systems for a variety of customers. The Tool: The knowledge repository: Well of Experience (WOX) -unstructured knowledge repository -Passive tool with mixed approach of Codification and Personalization strategies. The Research Method: Data collection - A method inspired by ethnography. Interviews, Screenshots, Pictures, Logbook Analysis - Grounded theory for Analysis organize the data: constructed a database, N5, a tool for analysis of qualitative research data categorization of the interviewed people: managers, project managers, developers, people responsible for knowledge management.

The Power of WOX Usages of WOX • Solve a specific technical problem. • Getting an overview of problem areas. • Avoiding redundancy in having to explain the same solution to several people. • Improve individual work situation by adjusting technical tools. • Finding who has a specific competence in the company.

  8. Critics What I like about this paper… • Authors have used realistic approach to find out the implementation and effect of using informal strategy for knowledge sharing. The area of improvement… • The quantitative measurement of improvement by implementation this strategy should be done. • The formal aspect should not be neglected, if we want to expand knowledge management to decision making.
