CU-Boulder Reports Progress…BRC recommendation to increase support of students Student Enrollment and Retention • Received renewal of significant Federal Grants dedicated to improve student success for 1st generation students: • Department of Education/Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program; and Indian Upward Bound • National Science Foundation Alliance for Graduate Education Program (NSF AGEP) • National Science Foundation Colorado Alliance for Minority Participation (NSF CO-AMP) • Bolstered scholarships and program support of students from first-generation families and diverse ethnic backgrounds • Supported undergraduate and graduate student attendance to various regional and national conferences ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress…BRC recommendation to enhance student aid Merit Based Financial Aid Programs • Increased pre-collegiate and CU-LEAD Alliance scholarships • Utilized the Presidential Scholars Program beginning in 2006 in part to increase the enrollment of high merit, non-resident 1st generation students • Established the First Nations Scholarship in 2006 to fund 15 four-year awards annually for non-resident tribally enrolled students • Chancellor’s Citizenship Scholars Program introduced in 2007 as the first multi-year merit program for Colorado residents to fund 25 four-year awards ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress…BRC recommendation to enhance student aid Need-Based Financial Aid Programs • Partnered with CU Office of the President and the Pioneer Fund to plan a scholarship campaign to raise $7.5M for CU Pre-Collegiate Development graduates • CU Promise Program created in 2005-06 provides Colorado low income students with grant and work-study aid to cover tuition, fees, and books • CU-Boulder increased the total amount of need-based financial aid for 2007-08 by 40% from 2006-07. These are continuing funds. ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress…BRC recommendation to review diversity programs Conducted Program Review and Evaluation of CU-LEAD ALLIANCE (12 learning communities) Recommendations include— • Expand Pre-Collegiate Programs • Increase level and quantity of scholarships • Improve level of infrastructure and staffing for CU-LEAD Alliance • Reinforce interactions and offerings in CU-LEAD Alliance (i.e., Leadership Institute, Service Learning, Study Abroad and Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programs/UROP) • Reviewers from the Universities of Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado State University and Metro State/Denver ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress… Campus Climate-Faculty Matters • Preliminary results suggest we attracted and hired 70 tenured/tenure-track faculty from diverse backgrounds: including 24 women and 17 faculty of color for Fall 2007 (9 Asian-Americans; 4 African-Americans; and 4 Hispanic-Americans). • Flagship 2030 (the campus strategic plan) includes a renewed commitment to improve our recruitment of women faculty and faculty of color ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress…BRC recommendation to offer a freshman leadership course Campus Climate-Curriculum is Important • CU-Boulder developed and currently piloting an Undergraduate Leadership Course- ARSC 1001 “Contemporary Research Universities and Student Citizens” • Over 400 students in a Residential Academic Program (RAP) setting ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress…BRC recommendation to conduct diversity training Campus-wide Diversity Training • Administrators, faculty and staff participated in BRC recommended mandatory training • Discrimination and Harassment Training is required by Human Resources for all faculty and staff • Disability Services offers training and support services for the campus • GLBT Resource Center provides Safe Zone Training for all faculty, staff and students ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress…Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement • After a national search appointed a new cabinet-level position of Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE), Dr. Sallye McKee, August 2007 • Promoted David Aragon, former director of Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) College of Engineering, to Assistant to the Vice Chancellor ODECE, November 2007 • Disability Services received substantial investments of campus resources to fortify and enhance services • ODECE is working with key leadership to improve collaborations and create partnerships across all divisions to enhance student/faculty success and broaden community outreach ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress… Strategic objectives going forward • Enhance accountability and transparency in the areas of faculty, student and staff recruitment and retention across all divisions • Reinforce a strong commitment to faculty success and improve the retention and recruitment of tenured/tenure-track faculty • Promote continuous learning in the areas of diversity and inclusion while benchmarking with regional and national best practices ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

CU-Boulder Reports Progress… Strategic objectives going forward • Increase support for the Pre-collegiate Program, K-12 Outreach and Summer Programs • Coordinate and align student support programs and activities that promote inclusiveness and excellence across all colleges and divisions • Support the Chancellor’s campus-based and external advisory committees: Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Minority Affairs (CACMA); Chancellor Committee on Women (CCW); Chancellor’s Standing Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Issues; Program Accessibility Committee (PAC); Chancellor’s Diversity Advisory Board (CDAB) ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

City of Boulder Since August 2007 VCs Ron Stump and Sallye McKee are inaugural members of the Subcommittee on Inclusiveness and Diversity/ Division of Community Services VC Sallye McKee appointed to the Boulder Chamber of Commerce CU-Boulder received a private gift to inaugurate the Chancellor’s Lecture Series. The first speaker will be Gerda Klein, February 19, 2008/All invited Greater Colorado CU-Boulder Office of Admissions established liaison with BRC members Charles and Angela Robertson to bring over 2000 pre collegiate students and parents to campus for various sports events Guests from diverse backgrounds were hosted at key athletic events fall 2007 ODECE heightened campus participation in ethnic specific Chamber of Commerce activities in Greater Denver CU-Boulder Reports Progress…BRC recommendation to enhance community engagement ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion

  20. Transformation While alluding to the powerful role of the abilities of humans to transform existing systems, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King quoted the words of an elderly enslaved preacher of the African Diaspora who said… “We ain’t what we ought to be and we ain’t what we’re going to be. But thank God, we ain’t what we was.” ODECE - Achieving Excellence through Diversity and Inclusion
