  2. The Compromise of 1850 • After many discussions, the deadlock over California, was it to be a free state or a slave state, was still strong. This was until Henry Clay came up with a solution to this problem, the Compromise of 1850. The Compromise of 1850 was a large compromise that included abolitionists, northern politicians, southern politicians, residents of new states and western territories. The compromise stated that the state of California will be admitted as a free state, while New Mexico and Utah would be admitted as states open to slavery. Also, slave trading would be abolished in Washington D.C, but slaveholders would be able to keep their slaves. The final part of the compromise was that a strong fugitive law would be put into effect, which stated if a slave was caught it must be immediately returned to their master, no matter north or south, and if any person was caught helping a slave, they would be severely punished. The compromise took 9 long months of discussion before it was passed and once it was it caused a lot of controversy, mostly because of the new Fugitive Slave Law. This new law affect everyone across the United States because now they were responsible for others slaves. Also, freedom was basically taken away from slaves unless they fled to Canada. They could no longer go North for freedom, they were trapped. This law made it so no freedom was given to the slaves, which is what the north wanted to give them. Northerners rarely enforced this rule because of how against their beliefs it was, this angered the Southerners causing even more tension. Tension continued to increase, until it erupted into the bloodiest battle in American History, the Civil War.
