  1. The Valencia County Resiliency Corps is a five year project of the New Mexico Department of Health-Office of Injury Prevention in Collaboration with UNM-Valencia.

  2. Resiliency: The ability to recovery from challenges and be safe, healthy, and successful.

  3. Resiliency Corps: A community mobilizing project promoting evidence-based youth injury prevention strategies and strengthening youth resiliency factors.

  4. The NM Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (YRRS) provides important information about resiliency and the risks high school and middle school students report facing. Let’s look at the risks.

  6. Persistent feeling of sadness and hopelessness Valencia Co. 28.1% Seriously considered suicide Valencia Co. 16.5% Physical fight Valencia Co. 40.5% Skipping school because of safety issues Valencia Co. 7.8%

  11. THE RESILIENCY CORPS FOLLOWS A 5-STEP PROCESS 1. Discover Problems 2. Seek Solutions 3. Gather Community 4. Launch Strategies 5. Evaluate Progress

  12. STEP 1: DISCOVER PROBLEMS Learning which injury areas are hurting people the most by looking at data. We can link you up with county-specific data online.

  13. STEP 2: SEEK COMPREHENSIVESOLUTIONS Using culturally appropriate and evidence-supported approaches to find solutions to injury problems.

  14. STEP 3: GATHER THE COMMUNITY TO BUILD CAPACITY Engaging a wide array of community partners, school staff, and public health representatives to work toward shared goals.

  15. STEP 4: LAUNCH PROVEN STRATEGIES Implementing comprehensive solutions to decrease injury and increase resiliency factors.

  16. STEP 5: EVALUATE PROGRESS AND SUCCESS Tracking activities and efforts to determine progress toward reaching clearly defined goals.

  18. PHASE ONE:Creating the Corps Resiliency Corps meetings bring people together-- strengthen networks--recruit students—and keep people informed online and at monthly informational meetings.

  19. PHASE 2: Launching the Course Enroll residents of all ages in the “Youth Safety, Health and Resiliency” 16-week course. 16 online lessons 7 classes with experts

  20. PHASE 3: Developing Community Projects Students and Corps members propose, design and implement Corps projects–with technical assistance from the Office of Injury Prevention

  21. PHASE 4: Working Long Term The Resiliency Corps is a 5-year project that continually reviews new proposals and guides and evaluates injury prevention project projects.
