  1. Discussion Look at the following cartoon and discuss with a partner what you think it means?

  2. Appeasement Definition: Making concessions to an enemy with the intention of avoiding conflict with that person Britain Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain appeased Hitler (gave him what he wanted) hoping that it would make Hitler happy and keep peace in Europe

  3. appeasement Britain’s policy of appeasement toward Germany gave Hitler confidence that he could continue to build up his military and take over more territories

  4. Appeasement The Rhineland Germany marched troops into the part of Germany that was supposed to be demilitarized Britain could have used their military to stop Hitler but they did nothing Hitler realized that Britain and France did not want to stand up to him

  5. Appeasement Austria Hitler wanted to reunite his home country with Germany The President of Austria did not want to join with Hitler and Germany Hitler used his influence to make the Austrian President resign, again Britain and France refused to do anything

  6. Appeasement The Sudetenland Part of Czechoslovakia that was home to many Germans Hitler wanted that land, Czech didn’t want to give it up, Hitler made threats of invasion Britain, France, Germany and Italy all met…decided the Sudetenland would be given to Germany Soon after Hitler invaded the rest of Czech without any resistance

  7. Appeasement Poland Hitler next set his sights on Poland Hitler wanted Poland for “Lebensraum”- living space for Germany September 1st, 1939, Hitler invades Poland Septermber 3rd, 1939, Britain finally ends policy of appeasement…Britain and France declare war on Germany. WWII had begun

  8. Appeasement • CRITICS OF THE APPEASEMENT WOULD ARGUE: • That a tougher line was needed with Germany. Appeasement allowed Hitler to become stronger. • The threat of military action should have been against Germany much earlier than 1939. • Perhaps if Hitler had been strongly challenged in 1936 during the Rhineland incident he might have pursued more peaceful methods. • The German people may even have voted him from power for risking another war • SUPPORTERS OF APPEASEMENT WOULD ARGUE: • If World War 2 had not broken out, the policy of • appeasement would be seen as successful. • Preventing a second world war was a noble and • admirable course of action. • It was the only course of action open to Britain. A Good or Bad Policy? Create a chart that shows the thoughts of the supporters and critics of appeasement.
