  1. Respiratory System What it is and how it works

  2. What is it? • The respiratory system is a system of organs in the human body that’s main task is to perform respiration. It is composed of 10 separate organs. • Respiration is the act or process of breathing.

  3. Nose (Nasal Cavity) • The nose is used for smelling and taking in oxygen. • Also expels Carbon Dioxide

  4. Mouth (Oral Cavity) • The mouth takes in food, water, and oxygen • Also expels Carbon Dioxide

  5. The Epiglottis • The epiglottis is a flap of tissue designed to close over the trachea, preventing food and water from entering the lungs.

  6. The Larynx • The larynx is the voice box and vocal cords. It is used for talking. It manipulates pitch and volume.

  7. The Trachea • The trachea is the windpipe and is used for transporting food and water to the esophagus, and air to the lungs.

  8. The Bronchi • Passages through which air spreads through the lungs.

  9. Diaphragm • Dome shaped muscle that causes the chest cavity to expand and contract

  10. Alveoli • Tiny air sacs through which the gas exchange of external respiration takes place.

  11. Pharynx • The pharynx is the throat, it transports the food, water, and air down it until it reaches the esophagus and the trachea.

  12. Relation to other systems • The respiratory system is directly related to the circulatory system, in that it brings oxygen in so it can be taken to all the cells. It also expels the carbon dioxide waste. • Another system that the respiratory system is related to is the excretory system, in that it expels the carbon dioxide waste.

  13. Conclusion • The respiratory system is a vital body system that lets us breathe. It is important to know about this system so you can properly take care of it.
