How Is Heat Transferred? • Heat is transferred in one of three ways. • CONVECTION • The transfer of energy/heat by the movement of a fluid. • RADIATION • The transfer of energy/heat that is carried in rays, like light. • CONDUCTION • The transfer of energy/heat between materials that are touching.

  7. Convection Currents in Soup GRAVITY: Cooler soup become more dense. Gravity pulls soup back down to bottom of pot where it is reheated. TOP: Warm, less dense soup moves upward. It become cooler.   8. Convection Current CONVECTION CURRENT Heating and cooling of a fluid, changes in the fluid’s density, and the force of gravity combine to set convection currents in motion.

  9. Convection in Earth’s Mantle • Inside Earth, heat from the core and the mantle act like the stove that heats the pot of soup. • Heat from the core and mantle itself causes convection currents in the mantle.
