  2. OSHA’s Philosophy • An effective workplace culture should value safety and health • Employers should establish specific goals for reducing workplace accidents, injuries and illnesses • Compliance with OSHA standards will never be optional

  3. Standards Addressed • Sources • OSHA 10-hour general industry and construction course • Most frequently violated standards • Root cause analysis of injuries, illnesses and fatalities

  4. Walking and Working Surfaces • Principal concern is slips, trips and falls • Survey condition of floors, floor holes, openings, stairs, ladders and platforms • Safe aisle clearance, no blockage • Platforms guarded by a standard railing (4’) • Ladders, stairs in good condition

  5. Means of Egress / Fire Protection • Fire extinguishers – training • Exits clearly indicated, sufficient, allow free and unobstructed access • Emergency Action Plan vs. ERP • Emergency escape procedures and route assignments • Procedures to account for employees following an evacuation

  6. Flammable and Hazardous Materials • Maximum outside a storage room or cabinet is 120 gallons of IB, IC, II or III • Transfer of class I liquids where spill can be contained, no sources of ignition, by safety can, pump or gravity by a dead-man valve • Electrical interconnection of metal transfer containers – bond wire

  7. Personal Protective Equipment • Conduct a hazard assessment to determine what and where PPE is necessary • Select and have employee use appropriate PPE • Communicate selection decisions • Select PPE that fits • Written certification of assessment
