  1. Project 2.5.8 Identification of new selective toxicants for control of aquatic invasive fish Dr. Terrance D. Hubert, Mark P. Gaikowski & James A. Luoma, Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center, La Crosse, WI Dr. Tammy Clark, Viterbo University, La Crosse, WI

  2. Introduction and Objectives • Improve/advance the state of knowledge regarding • the structure-activity relationship (SAR) for fish • toxicants • Identify additional chemicals that can be used as selective fish toxicants • Reduce physical screening process used in 50s, 60s, & 70s • ~6,000 screened for lampricides • Expand the chemical tools available to aquatic resource managers for controlling AIS

  3. Current Knowledge • Millions of Chemicals in the CAS registry • Hundred of thousands of chemicals since early piscicide screening • Structure-Activity Relationships • Correlate structural features (size, shape, functionality) with biological activity ETC OP Uncouplers W. H. Gingerich in Integrated Management Techniques to Control Nonnative Fishes. Dawson and Kolar 2003 U.S. Geological Survey

  4. Current Knowledge (continued) Synthesis of GD-174 and Analog Design

  5. Future Plans • Review literature and mine existing chemical databases to correlate structure to biological activity (SAR) • Develop visual correlation models • Select chemicals for evaluation • Physical screening of select chemicals

  6. Technological or Other Hurdles • Access to chemical libraries • Synthesis of test chemicals and analogs • Development of analytical methods for promising chemicals • Development of delivery methods/routes

  7. Data Gaps • Effects of chemical mixtures on toxicity • Knowledge of detoxification methods of native and invasive species
