  1. Vertex Pay and Grading 2010

  2. Background • Difficult pay background – Vertex and across other companies and sectors • Long discussions on “affordability” and requirement for Vertex to recognise Pathways is collective agreement • Discussions on market levels of Pathways salaries & regional pay weighting – UNISON view that salaries have fallen below market median in many areas

  3. Background • Clear that negotiated settlement not achievable through negotiation • Arbitration unlikely to succeed in view of company’s financial position • Industrial action is the only way forward to secure conventional pay deal • Discussions shifted to explore possible compromise position

  4. The Offer • TU’s are recommending members to accept the offer in lieu of normal pay increase • Decision lies with members • Will ballot for industrial action if this is the majority decision – but not recommending this

  5. The Offer - Pros • Introduces new steps above existing salary points – opportunity for higher salaries now and into future • Annual pay award in future will be paid on top of any move up salary steps – provides higher pay • Partly addresses market salary issue • Progression is based on normal performance over 4 quarters – do your job and you will move up

  6. The Offer - Pros • Opportunity for faster progression for outperformance • Protections are built in – cannot fall below step 1 (current salary point) & no link to disciplinary/capability procedures • 2010 pay round is separate to this

  7. The Offer - Cons • Can move down salary steps – but not below current substantive salary + no assessment of negative performance until Oct 2010 – nobody can be moved down until April 2011 • No “normal” pay increase for 2009

  8. Conclusion • Offer gives some pay movement not given to other Vertex staff • Benefits of this will last into future – higher pay levels than in current structure • TU recommendation is to accept the offer • Your decision

  9. Giving your view Your local UNISON representatives will take on board your views to feed into the overall decision. Your local representatives are – Rob Jones – Healthy Start Lauren Delves – Scottish Power Liz Long-Frey – National Trust
