  1. Engineering in the Media Zachary Bridges ECH2050 11/28/2012

  2. The Dam Busters • Basic premise: • A scientist is tasked with making a bomb that will be able to breach dams in the Ruhr river Valley • Based on a true story

  3. Movie clip: • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMv3RJDtJQA&feature=BFa&list=PL29D466A01311C557 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaOup7yLm_o&feature=BFa&list=PL29D466A01311C557

  4. The Engineering process • Identify the problem • Identify criteria and constraints • Brainstorm possible solutions • Generate Ideas • Explore possibilities • Select an approach • Build model or prototype • Refine the design Source: http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/plantgrowth/reference/Eng_Design_5-12.html

  5. The importance of small scale • Provides rapid response to design queries from all parties, both internal and external of the organization • Maintains a focus on the current status of a project’s development • Highlight shortcomings • Accelerates process of product development https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/dspace-jspui/bitstream/2134/1554/3/veveris94.pdf

  6. Suggestions for Improvements • A casing for the bomb that could withstand a fall at terminal velocity • A way to increase or decrease speed as needed. • Rockets, air foils • A guidance system http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/Tomahawk_Block_IV_cruise_missile.jpg

  7. The Dangers of Over-engineering • Processes can become too complex • Becomes difficult to identify and solve problems in an over-engineered situation. • More financial cost to the client • Because it is more complex, it will be more costly.

  8. Summing up • Build more small-scale prototypes than you know what to do with • Use the small scale to infer issues with the larger scale • Stay within your means
