  1. Power Line Carrier CommunicationbasedAutomated Meter Reading System AMR & Interoperability for Meter Data Exchange April 25, 2008; New Delhi, INDIA

  2. Contents: • Present Status of LT Energy Metering in Domestic • Issues with Other Communication Network • Critical Benefits from PLCC Communication • PLCC Based AMR Network Architecture • Primary Components • Advantages

  3. Present Status of LT Energy Metering in Domestic • To measure energy various Utilities still uses Electro mechanical meters and low cost digital meters with accuracy class is 1.0 above. • Line loss rate is estimated to be much beyond 20% due to tampering. • Readings of the meter is done manually that leads to obvious error and wastage of time and resource. • It is difficult to make exact load consumption analysis.

  4. Issues with Other Communication Network • Highly depends on other mobile network. • Accessibility of Mobile network in remote areas is not available. • In many cases manual reading is also not feasible. • Billing cycle requires excessive time. • System Maintenance is very expensive.

  5. Critical Benefits from PLCC Communication • Most economically viable technology for transferring Meter Data to DCU. • Using this technique of communication the data can be transferred over the existing LT Power lines. • Narrow Band Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Power Line Carrier Communications Technology. • Encryption is provided for, to ensure the data accuracy, integrity and security. Cont.,

  6. Benefits of PLCC - AMR Benefit Categories • Operational Savings • Supply Side Savings • New Revenue Opportunities The New Frontier • Power Quality • Outage Management • Reliability Improvement Cont.,

  7. Operational Savings • Real Time Meter Reading • No Estimated Bills • Meter accuracy • Ease in maintenance of the AMR system • Outage care center • Outage investigation & follow-up • Outage Reliability indices • Load research • Current diversion • Collections Supply Side Savings New Revenue Opportunities • Power Quality Monitoring • Power Outage Notification • kW Demand Monitoring • kW Threshold Alerts • Load Profile Data Services • Distribution Planning • Transmission Planning • Generation Expansion • Load Forecasting • Demand-Response

  8. Quantifiable Benefits • Reduced expenses • More effective planning • Minimise the losses • Reduction in capital expenditures • New revenue opportunities Intangible Benefits • Customer service benefits • Improved relations with Customers • Strategic benefits

  11. Overview of the PLCC – AMR System MRC: Meter reading front-end computer MSC: Management system front-end computer PSC: Power selling front-end computer CRM: Card reader/writer BCS: Base computer station DCU: Data concentrator unit POS: Point of sale

  12. Primary Components • 1 phase and 3 phase Direct Connected / CT operated Multi-function Energy Meter with in-built PLCC Modem. • Data Concentrator Unit (DCU) with inbuilt PLCC Modem for communication with Meters & GSM /GPRS/ PSTN Modem communicating with the central station. • Base Computer software (BCS) installed at Master Station Server with GSM/GPRS/ PSTN Modem.

  13. Advantages of PLCC - AMR • Remotely Connect / Disconnection of Power supply through PLCC Meter • Ability to detect tamper events and outage occurrences • Monitor electrical load in real time. • System has no running cost for data acquisition. • Reduction in manual meter reading costs. Contd ….

  14. Advantages Contd…. • Reduction in late and estimated billing costs. • Improved meter accuracy & Reduced meter maintenance expenses. • Reduction in Revenue Protection losses • Pre-Paid Metering can be done remotely, without requiring local smart card / Swipe Card. • Power Quality, Outage Management and Reliability Improvement.
