  1. Elaboration of a low-turbid colored waters purification technology Applicant: Ecology and Environmental Management Chair of MSTU

  2. Project’s objectives and actuality • Drinking water treatment technology, used now in the purification plants of the Murmansk Region, foresees the use of aluminum sulfate as coagulant. Aluminium sulfate usage by low-turbid colored water purification has both its positive and negative sides. • Rather low coagulation efficiency at low temperatures, as well as water corrosivity increase should be considered as negative characteristics of this process. • The aim of the project is to optimize the reagent natural treatment technology in the Murmansk city and Murmansk Region

  3. Methods • Selection of the effective coagulants, flocculants; • Optimal reagent doses determination, • Optimal operating practices selection • Operating practices correction of the natural water reagent treatment by the industrial testing at the water preparation station with the selected coagulants, flocculants

  4. Preliminary results • At the first stage of work the selection of natural sorbent that provides maximal extraction of dissolved organic substances was carried out. Contrastive analysis of sorption qualities of schungite, vermiculite and copper-nickel slag was conducted in real natural waters. • The efficiency of adsorption process was estimated by permanganate oxidation. Received results are shown in the chart.

  5. Efficiency of adsorption process estimation

  6. As we can see from the received experimental material schungite has the largest sorption ability regarding organic pollution of water. • The efficiency of organic substances extraction from waters of Lavna river is 70.3%, Bolshoje lake – 89.9%, Pervoje lake – 71.3%. Color of treated water had the following quantities: 19.2 deg., 16.1 deg., 19.8 deg.

  7. Expected results • Proposed drinking water treatment technology shall provide: • Treated water color decrease; • Treated water corrosivity decrease
