  4. Stephen F. Austin’s Death • Austin served as secretary of state for only three months before he died on December 27, 1836. • Houston proclaimed a 30 day period of mourning.

  6. First Attempt at Annexation • This was just an attempt at annexation. • The controversy over slavery kept Texas from being admitted to the U.S.

  7. Financial Woes • The biggest problem in the Republic was lack of money. • The Republic started out with million dollars of debt due to the Revolution. • Star Money was created as promissory notes. The government could use up to $600,000 worth of promissory notes on goods and services.

  8. Houston’s Native Texan Policy • The Texas congress didn’t want to make good on the treaty that Houston had made with the natives during the revolution. The land that was promised to the natives was good farm land that the Anglo Americans wanted. • The natives acted out due to frustration with all the Anglo Americans moving onto their land. They began raiding parties. • Houston brought in the Texas Rangers to help keep the peace between the natives and settlers.

  13. The Election of 1844 • Dr. Anson Jones becomes president • Texas Congress approved a joint resolution on February 26, 1845 agreeing to accept Texas as the 28th state. • On December 29, 1845 TEXAS BECAME A STATE!!!! • February 19, 1846 president Jones announced the annexation of Texas.
