Nouns in English Grammar • A noun is a person, place, thing, activity, or idea. • Latin word for noun is “nomen” which means “name” • Noun cases: subject, direct object, indirect object, object of preposition, possessive, predicate noun, object compliment noun • Other noun classifications: appositive, noun of direct address, gerund, et al • Noun case is determined by where the noun is placed in the sentence.

  9. Latin Nouns: Number & Gender • Identified according to its Number, Gender, Case and Declension. • Number: Singular (one) or Plural (more than one) • Gender: Masculine, Feminine, and Neuter. • In English, gender is natural. • In Latin, gender is assigned.

  10. Case: Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Ablative Function in a Sentence: Subject Shows possession (‘s or s’) Indirect object (to,for) Direct object Object of preposition Latin Nouns: Case Locative and Vocative are 2 additional Latin noun cases. They are rarely used.

Latin Nouns: Declensions • Reminder: a declension is when the endings of nouns, pronouns and adjectives are changed • There are five Declensions distinguished by the ending of the genitive singular and a distinguishing vowel: Declension Gen.Sing.Ending Dist.Vowel First -ae a Second -i o Third -is i Fourth -us u Fifth -ei e I’m sure this is confusing. The handout I’m giving you will help. We also have many weeks ahead of us to practice, so please do not get discouraged!

Accusative Case • The Accusative Case serves the function of a direct object in Latin. • The endings are: Declension Singular Plural First -am -as Second -um -os Third -em -es Fourth -um -us Fifth -em -es Using these words, let’s determine the Number & Declension: agricolam, annum, annos, agricolas.
