  2. The Longsuffering Landlord & His Son Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19 The conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders continues to escalate on Wednesday Jesus’ first parable rebuked them for their hypocrisy, and His second parable will be a strong warning

  3. The Second ParableMatthew 21:33-41; Mark 12:1-9; Luke 20:9-16 It is significant being in Matthew, Mark and Luke, and it is analogous with God’s dealings with Israel

  4. A Longsuffering LandlordMatthew 21:33-36; Mark 12:1-5; Luke 20:9-12 The landlord makes a considerable investment to establish a first-class vineyard

  5. A Longsuffering LandlordMatthew 21:33-36; Mark 12:1-5; Luke 20:9-12 He makes a sharecroppers agreement with vine-keepers - a common practice The vines would mature within three years, so the distant landlord sends slaves to collect what is owed Mark & Luke detail what happens to each slave - the 1st is beaten and sent away with nothing

  6. A Longsuffering LandlordMatthew 21:33-36; Mark 12:1-5; Luke 20:9-12 The 2nd slave is also beaten, received head wounds, treated shamefully and sent away with nothing The 3rd slave is wounded and cast out. The 4th slave is murdered - additional slaves are beaten or killed The landowners patience & forbearance are extreme

  7. A Selfless SonMatthew 21:37-39; Mark 12:5-8; Luke 20:13-15 The son goes despite the terrible treatment of the slaves sent, and apparently alone and unarmed The landlord is representative of God whose longsuffering of man’s sins is incomprehensible

  8. A Selfless SonMatthew 21:37-39; Mark 12:5-8; Luke 20:13-15 1 Peter 3:8 Psalm 86:15 Romans 9:22 The son is representative of Jesus - selfless and facing persecution and crucifixion to ransom mankind

  9. Wicked Vine-keepersMatthew 21:38-41; Mark 12:7-9; Luke 20:14-16 The landlord’s son is killed outside the vineyard which would keep it from becoming defiled The vine-keepers are thinking that with the heir dead, they could gain control of the land

  10. Wicked Vine-keepersMatthew 21:38-41; Mark 12:7-9; Luke 20:14-16 Presuming on God’s longsuffering patience is foolish because it will end unexpectedly The people give Jesus the obvious answer that the landlord will bring the wretches to a wretched end

  11. Wicked Vine-keepersMatthew 21:38-41; Mark 12:7-9; Luke 20:14-16 In recognizing the implication of the parable, they were shocked and exclaimed, “May it never be!”

  12. Prophecies of Hope & CondemnationMatthew 21:42-44; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17-18 Jesus applies Psalm 118:22-23 to Himself The religious leaders have rejected Jesus, but God makes Him the perfect chief corner stone

  13. Prophecies of Hope & CondemnationMatthew 21:42-44; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17-18 God was patient with Israel though the nation mistreated, abused and murdered the prophets He sent Count it a privilege and rejoice if you are treated as the prophets - Matthew 5:10-12

  14. Prophecies of Hope & CondemnationMatthew 21:42-44; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17-18 The parable informs the religious leaders of God’s judgment on them 1 Peter 2:9-10 - hope is given to mankind as God calls a new people to proclaim His name to the nations

  15. Prophecies of Hope & CondemnationMatthew 21:42-44; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17-18 Isaiah 8:14-15 - Jesus would be the stumbling stone over which the self-righteous would fall and be broken Daniel 2 - Jesus is the great stone that fills the earth and pulverizes the wicked

  16. The ReactionsMatthew 21:44-46; Mark 12:12; Luke 20:19 They recognize the parable applies to them - and they would have seized Jesus except for fear of the people

  17. Conclusions What is the application of this parable to your life? If you have been rejecting God’s authority like the wicked vine-growers, then repent! If you have repented to receive God’s forgiveness in Christ, then rejoice and serve Him as a good steward!
