  1. John Gutmann By: Kiara Marin

  2. Autobiography DOB: 1905 Place of Birth: Brealau, Germany Studies to be a painter before turning into photography. He migrated to the US and became known for his vivid photos. He worked as a Photojournalist in Germany and continued as a photojournalist when he came to the US. He was also a professor at San Francisco state University.

  3. Education • Studied as a master student in Art at Breslau's Akademie für Kuns and Kunstgewerbe. • Work shown at: • The Amon Carter in Fort Worth, San Francisco’s Museum of modern art. • Seagram Collecting in New York • Known for taking pictures the way the human eye saw it. • Gutmann got his inspirations from thinking of a camera as a human eye. Taking pictures of anything and everything he saw the way he saw it.

  4. Gamblers in the window Taken: Portland, Oregon Year: 1954 • Critique: I like the angel this photo was taken. It really focuses on what it needs to with out having the glare in the glass distract it.

  5. I am the magic hand • Taken: San Francisco • Year: 1937 • Critique: I like the idea of this photo. Also the fact that it has actual hand prints that are faded on top then the one drawn off to the side and the one drawn is “The magic hang”

  6. The artist lives dangerously • Where: San Francisco • When: 1938 • Critique: Very main focused on the child that is on the side of the street drawing. The car driving close to the child adds to get the photographers’ point across.

  7. Lost what • Where: San Francisco • When: 1938 • Critique: Leveled out right, so it’s not weird to look at. It should have had all the writing visible and maybe more readable to be able to look at it more carefully.

  8. Autumn • Where: Charlottenburg • When: 1933 • Critique: I think maybe the way the photo was taken could be better angle or taken at a different direction. Other than that I really like it.
