  13. Daniel 9: 24-27 23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew [thee]; for thou [art] greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, [that] from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince [shall be] seven weeks, andthreescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall comeshall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof [shall be] with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

  14. The “70 Weeks” of Daniel The Scope Dan 9:24 The 69 Weeks Dan 9:25 (The Interval) Dan 9:26 The 70th Week Dan 9:27

  15. The Scope Seventy weeks [literally: Seventy sevens] are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, • to finish the transgression, • to make an end of sins, • to make reconciliation for iniquity, • to bring in everlasting righteousness, • to seal up the vision and prophecy, and • to anoint the most Holy Place. Daniel 9:24 • 70 Sevens (weeks) = 490 time periods (years) • Key points: • The focus of the passage is on the Jews and Jerusalem, • not the Church nor the Gentile world. • The six major items listed have yet to be completed. • The 70 sevens are not contiguous

  16. How would you describe groups of Seven… Sabbaths Weeks Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined … Heptads The idiom of a "week" of years was common in Israel as a "sabbath for the land" in which the land was to lie fallow every seventh year. (Lev 25:1-22; 26:33-35; Deut 15.) Actually, it was their failure to obey these laws that led to God sending them into captivity by the Babylonians (2 Chr 36:20-21). And it was the number of times they ignored the ‘sabbath’ year of the week of years that determined the length of their captivity.

  17. The 69 Weeks Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the King [Meshiach Nagid] shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Daniel 9:25 7 Sevens (weeks) and 62 Sevens (weeks) = 69 Sevens (weeks)

  18. All Calendars Change in 701 B.C. • In 701 B.C., all calendars appear to have been reorganized. • Numa Pompilius, the 2nd King of Borne, reorganized the original calendar of 360 days per year, by adding 5 days per year. • King Hezekiah, Numa's contemporary, reorganized his Jewish calendar by adding a month each Jewish leap year (on a cycle of 7 every 19 years.) • (A fascinating conjecture as to the cause of this calendar change is the possible antics of the Planet Mars.) • The Biblical Calendar uses 360 day years. • (Gen. 7:24; 8:3,4, etc. • In Revelation, 42 months = 3 1/2 years = 1260 days, etc.) • Sir Robert Anderson: “The Coming Prince”

  19. Count on it…Literally, count it out • This is a mathematical prophecy. • We know that the Jewish (and Babylonian) calendars used a 360-day year • (Gen 7:24; 8:3,4; Rev 11:2; 12:6; 13:3, 5; etc.), • 69 weeks of 360 day years totals 173,880 days. • In effect, the Angel Gabriel told Daniel that the interval between the commandment to rebuild Jerusalem until the presentation of the Messiah as King would be 173,880 days.

  20. Where to start counting? The Decrees to “Rebuild” (1) Cyrus, 537 B.C., Ezra 1:2-4; (2) Darius, Ezra 6:1-5, 8, 12; (3) Artaxerxes, 458 B.C,. Ezra 7:11-26; (4) Artaxerxes, 445 B.C., Neh 2:5-8, 17, 18. • Commands (1), (2), & (3): were to build the Temple. • Only (4) was to rebuild the city, the walls, etc. • …from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem…the street shall be built again, and the wall…. Dan 9:25 The commandment to restore and build Jerusalem was given by Artaxerxes Longimanus on March 14, 445 B.C. (The emphasis on the street and the wall is to avoid confusion with the other mandates involving only the Temple).

  21. Chronology of Jesus Ministry • Christ’s ministry began in the fall of 28 AD • Tiberius appointed: 14 AD (Augustus died August 19, 14 AD) • 15th year of Tiberius: 29 ADLuke 3:1 • Thus, His ministry began in fall 28 AD • Thus His 4th Passover: April 6, 32 AD • The Triumphal Entry was therefore 10th of Nisan, prior to the Passover and the Crucifixion on the 14th of Nisan, 32 AD • Sir Robert Anderson’s dating • Other chronologies assume a Friday crucifixion

  22. Commandment to restore Jerusalem The Messiah the King LXX ~270 BC Decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus Mar 14, 445 BC 445 BC - 32 AD: March 14 - April 6: Leap Years: 173,740 24 116 173,880 April 6, 32 AD ?? What ?? ?? Happened ?? The Triumphal Entry Messiah the King The hour has come The 69 Weeks

  23. The Meshiach Nagid • The prediction is to the presentation of the Messiah the King • ("Nagid" is first used of King Saul.) • On several occasions they attempted to take Jesus as a King, • He invariably declined, "Mine hour is not yet come.“ • (John 6:15; 7:30, 44; etc.) • Then one day, He arranges it: • The Triumphal Entry • (Matt 21:1-9; Mark 11:1-10; Luke 19:29-39; John 12:12-16.)

  24. The Triumphal EntryJesus deliberately arranges things to fulfill Zech 9:9. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. Zech. 9:9

  25. The Triumphal EntryThis is the only day He allows them to proclaim Him King Luke 19:38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. Quoting Psalm 118:26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord…

  26. The Triumphal Entry • Luke 19:39 • And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, • Master, rebuke thy disciples. Why? What for?

  27. Luke 19:40 And He answered and said unto them, “I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”

  28. Luke 19:41,42 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. Rom 11:25

  29. Luke 19:43-44 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another... ...because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

  30. The Triumphal EntryHe held them accountable to recognize this day. (Luke 19:41-44). Mat 23:37-39 … and ye would not! 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. 39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed [is] he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Zec 13:9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It [is] my people: and they shall say, The LORD [is] my God. Zec 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for [his] only [son], and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for [his] firstborn. Phil 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: [10] That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; [11] And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  31. Verse 25 Verse 26 Verse 27 69 Weeks (Interval) 70th Week 7 62 weeks The Interval #1 • And after threescore and two weeks • shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: • and the people of the prince that shall come • shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; • and the end thereof shall be with a flood, • and unto the end of the war • desolations are determined. • Daniel 9:26

  32. 7 + 62 = 69 • The 62 (threescore and two) "weeks" follow an initial 7, so verse 26 deals with events after the 69th week of years. • Most commentators believe the first 7 “weeks” represent the time during which Jerusalem was actually rebuilt. Scripture does not indicate one way or the other. • In any event, after the “threescore and two weeks” Messiah the King (lit: Prince) would come but: • Messiah was to be "cut off," karat = executed (32 AD) • shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: • Amazing: The Old Testament predicts that Messiah is to be executed • – not just killed – • - executed - • and not for anything He had done… • That just didn’t fit their “theology”. • It must not mean what it says. • It must mean something else… • The allegorization of God’s Word is not just a modern phenomenon.

  33. There are several clear intervals indicated by the events described in v.26: • These events are after the 69th and prior to the 70th week: • And after threescore and two weeks • Messiah "cut of," karat = executed (32 AD) • shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: • 1) City and Sanctuary are destroyed (70 AD) 38 year gap • and the people of the prince that shall come • shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; • In 70 AD Titus Vespasian, with the 5th, 10th, 12th, and 15th Roman Legions leveled the city of Jerusalem exactly as both Daniel and Jesus had warned in advance. • In 130 AD the Jews revolted again and Rome finished the job. • 2) The end comes as a flood (130 AD) another 60 year gap • and the end thereof shall be with a flood, • 3) Desolation is determined “unto the end of the war” • and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. • Cf: Ezek 4:1-8 and the ‘desolation of Jerusalem’ • A nearly 2000 year and counting gap • Ref: Dan 9:26; Isa 61:1,2; (Luke 4:18-20); Rev 12:5,6; Isa 54:7; Hos 8:4,5; • Amos 9:10,11; (Acts 15:13-18); Micah 5:2,8; Zech 9:9,10; Luke 1:31; 21:24 Intervals 1, 2, & 3 - Dan 9:26

  34. At least a 2,000 year Interval in Dan 9:26 • This interval is the period of the Church, an era kept secret in OT: • Matt 13:34-35 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: 35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. • Ephes. 3:5-6Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: • Ephes. 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: • The Lord seems to deal with Israel and the Church mutually exclusively. • Cf: Rom 9-11

  35. The Septuagint (LXX) • After his conquest of the Babylonian Empire, Alexander the Great promoted the Greek language throughout the known world. So nearly everyone spoke Greek. • Among the Jews, Hebrew fell into disuse, being reserved primarily for ceremonial purposes – as Latin did among the Catholics of today. • The Septuagint • About 300 B.C., long before the prophecies of the Book of Daniel began to be fulfilled, a project was undertaken to translate the Hebrew scriptures into Greek so Jewish scriptures (the Old Testament) would be available to the average Greek speaking Jew. • Seventy scholars were commissioned to complete the work and the result is what is known today as the "Septuagint" ("70") translation (abbreviated "LXX“) of the Old Testament. • It was very likely the Septuagint version of the Old Testament scriptures that Jesus quoted from so often in His teaching.

  36. The Book of Daniel • Irrefutably Documented • The Book of Daniel is actually one of the most authenticated books of the Old Testament, historically and archaeologically. • Still there are skeptics that claim (without any support for the claim) that Daniel could not be so accurate. It had to be written after the events had actually occurred; certainly couldn’t have been written in the 500 BC time frame; before all those astounding prophecies tool place…or so they would like to believe… • But the fact that the entire book of Daniel, together within the rest of the Old Testament, was translated into Greek and included in the Septuagint prior to 270 B.C., almost three centuries before Christ was born is a convenient short-cut for us to validate its authenticity. • Finally, Jesus used Daniel writings in His teaching and descriptions of future events.

  37. The 70th Week And he (“the prince that shall come”) shall enforce the covenant with [the] many for one week: and in the midst of the week (3.5 years, 42 months, 1,260 days into the week, “time. times and half a time”) he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:27

  38. The 70th Week (Verse 27) • This is the most documented period in the Bible: • "Mid-week": Dan 9:27 • "Time, Times, & 1/2 a time" Dan 7:25; Rev 12:14 • 42 months: Rev 11:2; 13:5 • 1260 days: Rev 12:6; 13:3 • The “Prince that shall come “enforces the Covenant” with “the Many“ for “one week” • "The many" is an idiom for Israel • This is the "Covenant with Hell," • Isa 28:15; Zech 11:15-17 etc. • This is a 7 year treaty but…it doesn’t last that long…

  39. The Book of Daniel • Often with the major prophetic events, God will provide a miniature or a sneak preview of the event in history. • Jesus in Matt 24:15 does that…he refers to the prophecy in Daniel 9:27 that in His day is yet to take place and references it to an actual event in Israel’s history – which was also still future event when Daniel was written. Jesus looks back to that historical event calling it by name to describe and use it as a recognition point for the future event that is still yet to come… • When ye therefore shall seethe Abomination of Desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:). . . Matthew 24:15 Still Future >>> * Historic event >>> ** Dan 9:27 >>> * Historic Event >>> * Past Event is >>> to happen again. Use it as a recognition sign. 167 BC, Antiochus IV ("Epiphanes") ** Dan 9:27 was written about 500 BC

  40. The Abomination of Desolation • The sacrifices and oblations cease: 2 Thes. 2:4. • To cease they must begin again. This requires a Temple (or at least a Tabernacle) to be available and consecrated in Jerusalem. • (Preparations have already begun, the furniture, clothes and worship utensils are ready now!) • Historical precedent: • 167 BC, Antiochus IV ("Epiphanes") desecrated the Temple, sacrificing a sow on the Altar and erecting a pagan idol in the Holy of Holies; • It incited the Maccabhean Revolt, which succeeded in overthrowing his rule and in rededicating the Temple. • Still commemorated at Chanuhah. John 10:22.

  41. Gabriel’s Announcement – Dan 9:24-25 • Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, • to finish the transgression, • to make an end of sins, • to make reconciliation for iniquity, • to bring in everlasting righteousness, • to seal up the vision and prophecy, and • to anoint the most Holy Place. Daniel 9:24 The Messiah The King Commandment to Rebuild Jerusalem 69 Weeks 70th Week Interval The Church not “thy people”; the Jews Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the King shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Daniel 9:25 Abomination of Desolation 7 Weeks LXX 62 Weeks Decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus The Triumphal Entry 6 April 32 AD 173,880 Days 14 March 445 BC

  42. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself:… Daniel 9:26 69 Weeks 70th Week (Interval) The Church Restrainer Removed Abomination of Desolation Matt 24:15 3 1/2 years 42 months 1,260 days 3 1/2 years 42 months 1,260 days Man of Sin Revealed Apr 32 AD Jerusalem restored Wrath of God Apostasy Beginning of Sorrows The Great Tribulation 70 AD Jun 1967 and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, Daniel 9:27 and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:27 130 AD Covenant Enforced and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; Daniel 9:26 And he shall enforce the covenant with [the] many for one week: Daniel 9:27 and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Daniel 9:26 The 70th Week – Dan 9:26-27

  43. Time of the Signs: the "70th Week" is on the horizon • Israel has been and continues to be regathered as a Nation • On May 14, 1948, Israel was re-established exactly as and when the Bible predicted. • Temple Being Rebuilt • Explicitly predicted at least three times in the New Testament. • After 1900 years without a Temple, preparations for a new Temple are now being carried out in Jerusalem and around the world. • Babylon Rebuilt • Isaiah 13 & 14, Jeremiah 50 & 51, and Revelation 17 & 18, describe the destruction of the city of Babylon as a climactic event at the end of the "70th Week." • Saddam Hussein has spent over 20 years rebuilding the city of Babylon on its traditional site. He hosted state dinners in the restored hall of Belshazzar Dan 5

  44. Time of the Signs: the "70th Week" is on the horizon • European Superstate has Emerged • The confederation of 80 European countries (not just the 12 EC nations) is setting the stage for the very scenarios predicted in Daniel 2 & 7. • RussIa & Islamic invasion imminent • Russia ("Magog" of Ezekiel 38 & 39) and the Moslem republics of Central Asia appear to be setting the stage for the very events that Ezekiel so clearly described. • The Russian Republic has a joint defense treaty with the former soviet southern Moslem republics. • These southern republics have nuclear capability and delivery systems left behind when the Soviet Union broke up. • China (Kings of the East) Emerge as a World Power • Preparation for the coming false “World Leader”

  45. The Coming World Leader • Most of what we know is from the Old Testament. • Many of the references are rather subtle . • Some believe this leader will be a Jew: • Eze 21:25-27; Eze 28:2-10 (of the circumcision); • Dan 11:86,37; John 5:43 (allos, not heteros: thus, a Jew, not a Gentile.); • He is received by Israel, John 5:43; • The Leader will be the Son of Satan: • Gen 3:15; Isa 27:1; Eze 28:12-19; Rev 13. • Some believe he is Judas Iscariot reincarnated: Psa 55:11-14; • Death & Hell: Isa 28:18, Rev 6:8; Matt 12:41-43; John 17:12; • 2 Thes 2:3; Acts 1:25, with Rev 11:7

  46. The Coming World Leader • He will be: • An intellectual genius: Dan 7:20; 8:23; Eze 28:3. • An pursuasive orator: Dan 7:20; Rev 13:2. • A shrewd political manipulator: Dan 11:21. • A successful commercial genius: Dan 8:25; Rev 13:17;Psa 52:7; • Dan 11:38, 43; Eze 28:4,5. • A forceful military leader: Dan 8:24; Rev 6:2; • Rev 13:4; Isa 4:16. • A powerful organizer: Rev 18:1,2; 17:17. • A unifying religious guru: 2 Thes 2:4 ("Allah"?); • Rev 13:3, 14, 15. • Also: Ps 10, 52, 55; Is 10,11,13,14; Jer 49-51; Zech 5; Rev 18.

  47. Timing of the Rapture 1] The 70th Week is defined by the enforcement of a covenant with the Coming World Leader Dan 9:27 2] The Leader cannot enforce the covenant until after he appears in power. 3] He cannot even appear until after the Restrainer (the Holy Spirit as He works and today indwells the Church) is removed 2 Thes 2:7-9 4] Therefore, the Rapture of the Church MUST PRECEDE - by an unspecified period of time – the ENTIRE 70th Week of Daniel 9:27; not just part of it – and – not coming after it.

  48. The Great Tribulation • The "Time of Jacob's Trouble" climaxes • in the "Day of the Lord": • Isa 61:2; Zech 12, 14; Rev 19:19; et al. • Revelation 6 thru 19 details the events during the "70th Week" of Daniel 9 during which time Jesus Christ in His power and in vengeance is revealed to an unbelieving world as the true King and Judge. • He is revealed as fitting all the “I Am” statements that describe Him throughout scripture • He is revealed to be exactly as He describes Himself in His letters to the 7 Churches in Rev 2-3 • He is the Faithful and True, The Son of God, The Messiah. Redeemer, King and Righteous Judge - as the believers already know • - and the unbelieving world will quickly discover…

  49. Israel is God’s Timepiece Israel still has the last of their 70 sevens remaining on the clock. Their last ‘time out’ is almost over. God is about to start the clock again and give Israel a chance to take its last shot… But, not until He takes the church off the court.
