CENF Project is in 3 zones (preparation for the safety folder): • Primary beam line. • Target and Secondary beam areas. • EHN1 experimental area extension. • Safety aspects for Construction, Operation and Dismantling are treated • separately. • Operation includes commissioning, shutdown activities etc.

  3. Preliminary Risk Analysis for CENF SB areas • Motivation is for the “Access System” , which has two parts: Access control and Beam protection. • Interlocks cannot protect from activated materials • Access system will ensure correct ventilation for access • Specialist access is needed for equipment in cooling room/service pit • Non- Access system safety systems: • Many hazards will be controlled by procedures: DIMR, Beam Permits.. • BIW, AUG, Training. • Safety zones for crane operations. • Fencing around pits. • Smoke detection • Radiation and ventilation pressure monitoring. Target and Secondary AdR results: • which will be resumed in an EDMS document(when I get access to CENF node) • discussions clarified many areas, potential issues were defused before they became costly problems- a positive benefit from the exercise (as has been seen in other cases). • following the study some ideas have been modified, these will be integrated in the summary document too. Any changes will have verification through the EDMS approval process (no new meetings). • The AdR will be reviewed at the transition to the construction phase. • Other issues to have further clarification include : • water tightness of the DP works, • drainage and radiation issues (target area and DP activated water), • construction and commissioning  issues with the DP, • Dismantling plans, • Use of morgue space and blocks handling/ temporary storage.

Preliminary Risk Analysis for CENF SB areas • Noteworthy points: • Ventilation monitoring of δP (for operation) and flushing for access, this is a new development for the CV group. • Weakest link: the search procedure (as for all radiation areas), as in other areas the procedure will have a written protocol. • Beam Permit : this is an important element in the overall preparation for beam. A risk analysis shows that it is sufficiently reliable for its purpose. • Ion exchangers are radiation hot spots: worse than beam effects. An unexpected result: activated materials are a higher residual risk than beam, due to good shielding design. CENF: APR progress

Next Step: The EHN1 extension • An AdR is needed for the Experimental area, • Existing measures in EHN1 have no risk analysis published. • The new facility introduces different hazards. • Project details are still evolving but many aspects can be considered as fixed. • Specialist Input will be needed for Cryo hazards estimates and control methods. • Gran Sasso risk analysis needs revision as risks have changed (not separate halls, cryo “windows”, secondary beam, large population in vicinity..) • Dedicated issues for the project meetings? Should be driven by project team, not safety.
