  4. Mandarin Has Four Tones • First Tone : Xie • Second Tone: Xie • Third Tone: Xie • Fourth Tone: Xie

  5. This lead us to the most important word in Chinese • Xièxie (谢谢) • Let’s take a minute and practice saying thank-you to with your partner • Méishì (没事) or Bú kèqi (不客气) It’s nothing; you’re welcome

  6. Hello (and How are you) • Nǐhǎo(你好) • Nǐ hǎo ma? (你好吗 ) • Note: Ma (吗) can be added to the end of a statement to make it a question • Hǎo (好) means good or OK

  7. Where’s the party at? • … Zài nǎr? …(在哪儿?) • Again tone is very important; Nǎr (哪儿) means “where”, but Nàr (那儿) means “there”.

  8. Some Examples… • Jiǔbā zài nǎr? Where is the bar? • Cèsuǒ zài nǎr? Where is the bathroom? (厕所)

  10. A sample Dialogue A: Qǐng wèn, cèsuǒ zài nǎr? B: (pointing) Cèsuǒ zài nàr. A: Xièxie. B: Méi shì (bú kèqi).

  11. Buying Stuff • Duōshǎo qián? How much is it? • (多少钱?) • Tài guì le! (Piányì yī diǎnr.) It’s too much. (Drop the price?)

  12. Other Survival Words • Yòng diànhuà mā? • Use telephone? • (用电话吗) • Zhège shìbúshì... • Is this … • (这个是不是。。。) (不 Bú or bù = no)

  13. Getting Home • Wǒ yào qù zhège dìfāng. • I want to go to this place. • (我要去这个地方) • Wǒ yào qù Cuìgōng Fàndiàn. • I want to go to the Jade Palace. • (我要去翠宫饭店)

  14. Getting Home II • Zuǒ zhuǎn. • Turn left • (左转) • Yìzhī zǒu. • Go straight. • (一直走) • Yòu zhuǎn. • Turn Right • (右转)

  15. Can you help me?Nǐ kěyǐ bāng wǒ mā? I… Wǒ… …Am lost. …mí lù le. …don’t understand. …tīng bù dǒng. …am a foreigner. …shì wài guó rén. …want to take a shower. …yào xǐzǎo. …don’t want a CD. …bú yào CD (DVD).
