Aims • To ensure mathematics does not stagnate or decline during a gap year for RAEng year in industry students • Introduce students to new maths topics encountered in the first year of an engineering degree • Provide students with high quality supporting resources for a range of mathematical topics • Motivate students through marked assessments • Provide assessment feedback • Efficient marking and administration for staff Open and Distance Learning at Loughborough 9th April 2003

  4. Student Profile • All students have (at home or work) • access to a PC • internet connection (56k & above) • e-mail address • Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP • Internet Explorer & Netscape • Heavy workload - limited time for DL Open and Distance Learning at Loughborough 9th April 2003

  5. CAA Software • Runs from CD (no installation required) • 12 topics, each has approx 10 questions • Each question selected from a library of similar questions • Practice tests: feedback and marks. Conclusions • Time spent on-line minimised • Tests can be taken on any PC, anywhere, any time • Practice tests used by students to gauge progress before taking the final test • Large question libraries needed for both practice and final tests • Combined use of CD and WWW: best of both • Easy tracking and administration for staff and students Open and Distance Learning at Loughborough 9th April 2003
