  2. What is Reading? • Reading is making meaning from print. • For Kindergartners, reading is like breaking a code.

  3. Reading Activities • Aligned with new Common Core standards • Shared Reading (to build comprehension and vocabulary) • Orton Gillingham Curriculum (to build phonemic awareness) • Literacy Centers • Guided Reading • Ability Grouping

  4. Tricks and Sight Words • Tricks: alteration of usual letter sounds • Based on letter beside it • Based on placement in word • Sight Words/Red Words • High frequency • Know on sight • Smooth reading

  6. Math The Kindergarten mathematics curriculum is aligned with the new Common Core standards and provides students with in-depth experiences that help them practice concepts like number recognition, counting, shapes, patterns, graphs, sorting, measurement, addition, and subtraction.
