  2. Containing Communism • Kennedy’s policies on containing communism included: • flexible response (if a nation needed help, the U.S. would help them militarily) • Helping Latin American countries • Peace Corps (help less developed nations fight poverty)

  3. Containing Communism 2. The United States was losing the space raceto the Soviets and in 1961 a Soviet astronaut became the first person to orbit Earth. • Kennedy went before Congress and declared that the United States should land the first man on the moon.

  5. Crisis of the Cold War 1. Fidel Castro overthrew the corrupt Cuban dictator in 1959 and began working with Khrushchev.

  6. Crises of the Cold War Bay of Pigs • Eisenhower had authorized the CIA to secretly train and arm a group of Cuban exiles, known as La Brigada, to invade the island. • The invasion was a disaster and the Bay of Pigs was a dark moment for the Kennedy administration.

Crises of the Cold War Cuban Missal Crisis • On October 22, 1962 Kennedy announced the Soviet Union had placed long-range missiles in Cuba. • After secret negotiations, the Soviet Union offered to removethe missiles if the United States promised not to invade Cuba and to remove its missiles from Turkey. • Both countries also agreed not to test nuclear weapons.
