Kenya at a glance:Vision 2030 Economic pillar • Nominal GDP per capita of USD 888, • Kenya is ranked 147/182 countries in the world and 39 in Africa. • Economic Classifications for Kenya: • low income (other are upper, middle and lower income); • emerging developing (between developed and least developed); • third world (others are first, second and fourth world). • Social development - human development index (HDI) • Indicator for life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living. • 2010 HDI , Kenya was 16 in Africa and 128/169 world wide. • Classification is low human development (very high, high and medium). • Development challenges,-(NESC)-Kenya Vision 2030 • Annual growth >10% from 2012 • Rapidly industrializing country that is globally competitive.

9. Knowledge Management (KM) is… …about creating a shared knowledge context. Knowledge becomes the basis for effective action. The knowledge economy, heavily relies on knowledge to drive productivity and economic growth. To maximise on available knowledge then Knowledge Management is necessary.

10. Knowledge Management is… ….all about collaborating (sharing, learning, producing, innovation) with others for better results. You don't need to call it Knowledge Management While Knowledge Management does not have to be ICT-based, it benefits immensely from ICT.

Challenges on Knowledge Management Culture change to embrace formal education to acquire knowledge-intensive skills Indigenous knowledge given little recognition yet can be harnessed for economic empowerment & sustainability of rural poor Constitution not encouraging knowledge sharing – Govt Secrecy Act Uncoordinated benchmarking practices that are not shared! Failure to share knowledge-empire building and silo mentality

Suggested Solutions (1) Map all Knowledge Management initiatives & seek synergies – ESCs can spearhead Guarantee sustained investment for long-term benefits of efficiencies, savings, knowledge, and wealth creation. Inter-ministerial & PPP collaboration key Awareness campaigns to get buy-in by all players esp. citizens for a knowledge-friendly culture

28. Suggested Solutions (2) Investment incentives & other marketing strategies Demonstrate link between Knowledge Management and economic performance or value addition Top level support to KM initiatives Develop standards, clear purpose and language National Values System to curb cyber crime

Suggested Solutions (3) County govts to individually & jointly leverage on knowledge for economic and social devt - use their social-cultural and environmental richness gainfully Encourage & reward innovations – Kenya ranked 6th globally in research & Innovation Enablers: Kenya to become regional financial/services hub due to fibre optic connection-boost innovation, film industry, e-health, etc
