Best Practices • Start Planning Efforts Early • Meet regularly and delegate roles and responsibilities • Adopt the NCDA Theme into Planning the Week’s Activities • Highlight projects, programs and services that impact diverse constituencies • Distribute events across the community • Spread the Message • Develop a unique CD Week logo • Publicize! • Involve and Educate Others • Mayor’s Office, City Council, HUD, Communications, Special Events, Public Service, Parks and Recreation, the media and corporate sponsors (banks especially) • Encourage subrecipients/grantees to host their own events and then partner/”piggy-back” with them • Invite the Community and Have Fun!

  3. City of Knoxville’s 2013 CD Week Events Focus on: Housing Services A ribbon-cutting in the Five Points neighborhood highlighted new housing construction. Balloons throughout the community also highlighted owner-occupied rehab and energy retrofits (pictured are the HUD Field Office Director, Mayor Rogero and the new resident) An open house hosted by a subrecipient partner, Knox Housing Partnership, in the Lonsdale community highlighting (CHDO) homes designed to meet LEED standards and be visitable.   4. City of Knoxville’s 2013 CD Week Events Focus on: Homeless Initiatives A ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate renovations to Samaritan Place, emergency housing for homeless senior citizens. City of Knoxville’s 2013 CD Week Events Focus on: Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity • Categories of Awards included: • Disability Services • Fair Housing and • Section 3 City staff and winners of the 1st Annual Equity Awards The events was held on the 45th Anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  6. City of Knoxville’s 2013 CD Week Events Focus on: Community Outreach • City staff presented information about Community Development programs to the Council of Involved Neighborhoods. Neighborhood leaders shared the impact that the programs had in their communities. • A clothing drive sponsored by City employees resulting in 37 boxes of clothing donated to the Knox County Schools Clothing Center • City staff and community members read to students at an inner-city elementary school. The students then read to the volunteers. • The highlight of the week was a Community Development Fair at Ashley Nicole’s Dream Park, where CDBG funds had made the park accessible. Over 250 people enjoyed free food and games. Many community agencies had booths set up to highlight their programs. Finally, a Community Development Fair rounded out the week’s events. The fair was the highlight of the week! It was held at the Ashley Nicole Playground at Caswell Park, a prior CDBG-funded project. The playground is completely accessible with equipment, walking trails and green space. Many agencies and organizations had display tables, exhibits and provided hand-out materials. The fair featured free food and was very well-attended with over 250people. Children enjoyed the games and parents appreciated the opportunity to fellowship and network. Knoxville Community Development Week 2013 was a great success! Finally, a Community Development Fair rounded out the week’s events. The fair was the highlight of the week!
