Important Date: • Feb 25-28 registration during class time. • Thurs, Feb 28: registration for AP Exams during class. • You may register for ALL tests at one time during the same class period. • $13.00 for each test; $10.00 for those on free-reduced lunch. • You can only take an exam for a class in which you are currently enrolled.

  2. 2-15-13 Objectives: • To examine Shakespearean sonnets and compare/contrast them with Petrarchan and Spenserian sonnets. • To examine the AP multiple-choice exam.

  3. Today’s Agenda: • Test on sonnets 116 and 130. • Discuss Sonnet 73. • Go over last week’s AP multiple choice test. • Examine the Petrarchan sonnet. • Examine the Spenserian sonnet: read sonnets for homework.

  4. The Petrarchan Sonnet • Italian sonnet • Divided into an octave (ABBAABBA or ABBACDDC) and a sestet (CDECDE or CDCCDC or CDCDCD) • the octave presents a problem or a situation . • The sestet provides an answer or a resolution. • The switch from problem to resolution is called a turn.

  5. The Spenserian Sonnet: • Three quatrains and a couplet. • Follows the rhyme scheme ABAB BCBC CDCD EE.

  6. Things To Look Forin Sonnets I and VII: • Rhyme scheme • Structure • Theme • Tone • Imagery • What is being contrasted in Sonnet I? • Message about youth in Sonnet VII?

  7. Things To Look For in Sonnets 75 and 30:(Homework) -What analogy is being drawn in Sonnet 30? -Make inferences about the speakers in both poems. -Paradox in Sonnet 30 -Evaluate theme,structure,imagery,tone, and rhyme scheme in both poems.

  8. AP Multiple-Choice Test: • Grade was curved: thirty questions correct to get a 100! • Add twenty points to this grade by looking at any ten questions that you got wrong and explain what makes the correct answer the best choice. • Two different extra-credit assignments can be done during both lunches on A Days and first lunch on B Days. • Fri, Feb 22 is the deadline!!!
