  1. Jamie Quam Pedagogy Semantic Feature Matrix The relationship between new and unknown vocabulary words is that all the elements in the periodic table are either metals or nonmetals. Students need to be able to examine the periodic table and identify the zigzag line that separates the metals and nonmetals. Metals are to the left of the line and nonmetals on the right. In addition, each square is color-coded to represent whether the element is a solid, liquid, or gas. It also indicates the elements that exist only when they are formed in the laboratory. These elements have very high atomic numbers. Metal=elements in the periodic table that are shiny, conduct heat and electricity Nonmetal=elements that are on the right side of the periodic table Solid=a substance that has a definite shape and volume Liquid=a substance that has a definite volume but no definite shape Gas=a substance that has no definite shape or volume

  2. Reflective Statement: The Semantic Feature Matrix is a creative way for students to visualize new vocabulary and tie it together with simpler ideas that make sense to them. Introducing the vocabulary before students read the material helps them understand the words when they get to them instead of skipping over the word and never grasping the concept.
