  5. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) • Regulates U.S. commercial space transportation • Encourages and develops civil aeronautics, including new aviation technology • Regulates civil aviation to promote safety

  6. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) • To oversee federal funds used for constructing and maintaining the National Highway System. • Provides highway design and construction services for various federal land-management agencies.

  7. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) • Financial and technical assistance to local public transit systems. • Provides financial assistance to develop new transit systems and improve, maintain, and operate existing systems.

  8. United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) • Maintains the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF). • Has a ready source of ships for national emergencies. • Supports the military when needed.

  9. Surface Transportation and Uniform Relocation Assistance Act of 1987 • April 2, 1987 • Also known as Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1987 • Gave power to distribute money to the Secretary of Transportation. • Allowed states to raise the speed limit to 65 mph on rural Interstate highways.
